    Monaro

Rosalie Gascoigne’s 130.5 x 465 cm abstraction, Monaro, constructed from “sawn [and] split” “Schweppes boxes” and mounted on plywood, was created in and “inspired by birds flying” above the Monaro wheat belt, outside of Canberra. Despite the starkness of its unintelligible “fragmented words” and its resemblance to “wafting, waving dried grasses”, Monaro, overall, is both “allusive and illusive” on first impression. It consists of “four panels” that are composed of “reworked” “letters” that move in a broken, rhythmical and undulating way across the picture plane. Despite its one-dimensional, very “singular” abstraction, Monaro represents “the Monaro district”, Gascoigne’s abode for “more than fifty years” in which she acquired “solitary habits”. Viewed from this perspective, Monaro expresses Gascoigne’s affinity with the “vast, hard and unforgiving” Mount Stromlo. The expansiveness of the four panels reflects Gascoigne’s “long days [in] solitude” by which she developed her “highly original powers of observation” apparent across her oeuvre. Monaro is a construction of “slice[d], rotate[d] and montage[d]” soft drink crates, thus combines abstract with assemblage, “images [with] sculptural elements”. Gascoigne has a personal affinity for the materials she implements, as they are directly “sourced [from] the landscape” in which she spent “more than fifty years”. Gascoigne combines these two perfectly harmonious art genres due to her utility to them and, conversely, her “hopeless[ness]” with traditional art forms. Gascoigne’s “utterly down-to-earth and workmanlike” artistic process is exceedingly innovative. Having said that, Gascoigne frequently “shunned the limelight” and sought to reclaim herself after public appearances. The “blurred asymmetricality” of Monaro reflect Gascoigne’s “allusive and lyrical” endeavours, not wanting to “tell… a story” or “attribute [absolute] meanings” to her work, enabling ambiguous interpretation. The stark undulations of the “reworked”…

    Equiano

The book, The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, the African, is the autobiography of Olaudah Equiano, a male African slave during the eighteenth century, which discusses his time spent in slavery, his Christian faith, and his accomplishment of buying his own freedom. However, the thing that I found most interesting about the reading was the incident when Pascal sold Equiano to Captain James Dorn. I found this so interesting because Equiano had not anticipated on being sold as he said to Captain James Dorn, “But I served [Pascal]… many years and he has taken all my wages and prize money… besides this I have been baptized; and by the laws of the land no man has the right to sell me” (Equiano 69). Equiano’s feeling of surprise after realizing he had been sold was due to the fact that he believed he had a connection with Pascal. Equiano had professed a growing attachment to Pascal before his removal from Pascal’s ship, which can be seen when his master was wounded and taken below deck to the surgeons and Equiano states “…though I was much alarmed for him and wished to assist him I did not dare leave my post” (Equiano 61). The bond Equiano perceived between himself and Pascal blurred his vision of reality, and made him believe he was something that he was not. At the end of the day, he is still a slave and subsequently a piece of.…

The Tattooed Soldier, a novel written by Hector Tobar, tells a story of a Guatemalan immigrant by the name of Antonio Bernal, trying to make a new life in Los Angeles, California, but at the same time heal the wounds inflicted by painful memories of his murdered wife & son, Elena & Carlos. The worse of the memories is of the murderer, Sargento Guillermo Longoria, sitting on a bench eating ice-cream with a particular tattoo on his arm resembling a yellow jaguar. To escape the same fate that his family endured, Antonio got on a bus to America. Thinking this would be a kick-start to better things, an "All-American Dream" that was actually a nightmare. A bright, intelligent student back home in Guatemala city, he was reduced to an non-existent, incompetent being working remedial jobs to get by in the eyes of the affluent- the "Americanos" (pg. 10). In L.A especially, there was a lot of immigration coming from Guatemala. Common reasons for coming to America to live the "American Dream" was to escape poor sanitation, lack of economic opportunity, political instability & unnecessary persecution for being who you are. Life in Guatemala had harsher, permanent consequences compared to life in America. During this time frame,The 36-year war that engulfed Guatemala pitted the government against left-winged guerrilla groups. Imagine never really feeling comfortable in your own home, let alone in whatever type of environment you might be in, constantly looking over your shoulder to see if anybody is watching you, taking notes of your every move……. Antonio really didn't have to fear that in America, because here, he was invincible. In a place where optimism No one noticed or even cared who he was, the only thing that people thought when they looked at him was that he was "another homeless face" looking for free comfort. I see this a lot within…

“Did I consider myself a European, I might say my sufferings were great but when I compare my lot with that of most of my country men, I regard myself as a particular favorite of heaven, and acknowledge the mercies of Providence in every occurrence of my life.” In the writing, The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, Equiano gives a clear sense of how his early cultural beliefs play a role in his later life. I argue that Equiano’s early cultural beliefs in providence influenced his perception of subsequent events in his life. Through Equiano’s eyes Providence was the guiding force that had sustained him through his spiritual and physical slavery to freedom.…

Antonio Montoya Flores, or most widely known as El Farruco, was a gypsy dancer who danced to the most deep-rooted gypsy style of flamenco dance. Born in Pozuelo de Alarcon, Madrid, in the year 1935, before he became the world famous El Farruco, he spent most of his youth out living on the open road living the traditional gypsy life. His father was a horse and cattle dealer who traded at fairs and markets of Andalucia, while his mother was a Moroccan dancer with whom Farruco would try to entertain audiences at the market. However, Farruco went through a personal tragic experience that would scar him and ultimately influence his career as a dancer. The emotions that he displayed through his dancing came mostly from his first-hand experience with the pain and suffering he had endured. He was married by the age of fourteen, a father at the age of fifteen, a widower at the at age of just sixteen, and his son died at a road accident at the age of eighteen. He went through several losses and pain which greatly influenced the style of dancing that he performed on stage. His dancing style was impeccable and unrivaled by all so far. He spent most of his time at his dance school in Seville, and traveled with different flamenco troupes including Manolo Caracol, Lola Greco, and Matilda Coral. In 1977 he joined his daughters in their team under the title of Los Farrucos. He performed at the 1992 Expo in Seville where he was awarded the prestigious “Compas del Cante.” He appeared in several documentaries about gypsies and flamenco. He died at the age of 62 in 1997.…

    Agricola

When taking a brief glimpse back to the beginnings of English history, it is clear that many different cultures had a great impact on the people in England. Arguably the most significant influence on early English society was the Roman culture. This may come as a surprise to most, considering the distance between the England and Rome. Yet, it is very accurate. As a whole, the emperors of Rome had a singular goal of conquering the lands of the known world. After years of conquest, an island off the coast of Lower Germania and Belgica1 came into view to the Roman soldiers. This of course was what we know today as England. There is no doubt, after many years of Roman war and rule, that the culture of England was affected by Roman culture. However, what is not certain is how the British reacted to this Roman presence. It is here that an ancient text will be utilized: Agricola by Tacitus. In review of this writing, it can be inferred that the British felt not only aggrieved, but also threatened, and vengeful. These feelings culminate when the natives of Caledonia turn to armed resistance against the Roman rulers2. Before to discussing the British reaction to Roman presence, it is very important to comprehend why Tacitus writes the way he does in Agricola.…
