The purpose of this essay is to inform the reader about a poem by John Updike, called “Ex-Basketball player”. The speaker in the poem talks about a man named Flick Webb and his apathetic life. He informs the reader about Flick Webb’s exceptional talent as a basketball player in high school. Towards the end of the poem the realization is that Flick Webb’s exceptional basketball talent had been berried under his reality of life. In the eyes of the towns people there is a bit of sorrow towards him. It is as if there was an amazing talent that was or was not realized but was never pursued. Through out the poem, “Ex-Basketball Player” Updike makes sure to show glimpses of his once renounced passion for basketball. The mood of the poem goes from explaining in detail facts and scenes of his life. Than it changes tone to a extraordinary high school basketball player. Than it quickly changes to a depressed feel that nothing ever came of it.…
This emphasis on character growth and the development of a man into a gentleman, is what influenced James Naismith to create the game of Basketball in 1891 (Harris, 2014, p.1). Moreover, men would desire to play it for benefits other than just physical activity. Loyalty, self control, self sacrifice and teamwork, the foundations of Christianity and altruistic Christian manhood, were the moral principles that basketball originally promoted (Carroll, 2003, p. 197).…
In today’s generation of basketball superstars, there is one distinguished player, Kobe Bryant that holds a reflection to another known superstar, Michael Jordan in his ability to play the game, offensively and defensively; however, they differ in their overall performances. Although sports fans attempt to compare the two players, many will agree that Michael Jordan carries the best offensive and defensive numbers, while Kobe Bryant holds the title of the youngest all-star to ever enter the National Basketball Association. Both Jordan and Bryant were offered huge endorsement deals, with Kobe Bryant taking the lead as one of the largest global brands, in basketball history. The game of basketball is a rewarding sport that allows its players to give back to the community. There is no competition, when it comes to giving back to the community, as each player is equally involved in charitable organizations.…

What makes a piece of art art? Is it the creation itself or is it a combination of elements that make a piece a good piece of art. Artist use elements to add depth and meaning to the pieces they create. The two poems, “Slam, Dunk & Hook” and “Fast Break” both capture the attention of the audience by describing basketball as a game of imagery versus a game of athleticism. In, “Fast Break” by Edward Hirsch, the author uses vivid diction. Hirsch states, “to see an orange blur” (Hirsch). This describes the basketball as a flowing object. His tone is very easy going at this point in the poem. He uses vivid imagery to show that basketball is an art and it isn’t always about the fans and the players but about the ball and the court.…
Two of its characteristics that the artist use were the portrayal of modern life and bit of impression in Realism, Romanticism, and Neoclassicism. The artist uses the portrayal of modern life by centering the artwork on basketball, specifically the NBA. The artist uses a bit of impression in Realism by painting the everyday genre, which were the basketballs. He also uses a bit of Romanticism by levitating the three basketballs in a straight line, which is illogical. He also uses a bit of Neoclassism by giving the image an architectonic feel and order/structure. These were the historical information in the…
Since its beginning over a century ago, basketball has evolved from a simple form of exercise with only a few rules to a highly competitive and complex national sport. Basketball was invented by James Naismith at a YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1891 (Fox 11-13). It began as an activity for the “‘ball-game’ void” months of winter (Hanson 65), and Naismith had five standards for the game. He wanted a ball that could be handled by a player’s hands; no one was to run with the ball, and anyone could grab the ball from another player as long as the ball was in play. There was to be no personal contact, and the goal was to be raised from the ground. He created the idea and standards for basketball by combining certain aspects of American…
My belief is that Troupe thinks of basketball in rhythm and he wants that to translate into his poem. I don’t know if he has a distinct love for Magic Johnson or if he just recognizes that “Magic” is the best player you could use to relate basketball and rhythm, but it’s the greatest example I can personally think of. He uses phrases like “herk and jerk” , “juke and dazzle”, and “shake and bake” to make his readers feel how “Magic” danced his way down the court and took it to the hoop. The text makes me feel as if he learned basketball personally from “Magic”. I think his reason for choosing Magic Johnson has a deeper meaning than that he really likes him as a player. The use of the word “Magic” throughout the poem makes me feel like the actions Magic Johnson is performing in the poem are truly magic. Troupe says “you created your own space to fly through” to describe him blazing down the court,…
