The two images I chose for the analysis paper are Martini, Simone and Lippo Memmi, Annunciation with Saints Ansanus and Margherita (1333) and Brunelleschi, Filippo, Dome of Florence Cathedral (1420-36). The reason I chose these are because they relate to the Catholic religion in different ways. The Annunciation with Saints Ansanus and Margherita was the beginning of the Catholic art during the Gothic time period while the Dome of Florence Cathedral was not only a masterpiece of artwork it was also a breakthrough for the construction during that time and for the rest of history.…
Kehinde Wiley is a famous artist known for his naturalistic portraits of African-Americans and for his unique representation of people living in the 21st century. One of the many works he did is known as Prince Albert, Prince Consort of Queen Elizabeth, which was made in the year 2013, and the medium used was oil. The size of the canvas is 72 x 60 inches and has a striking black frame that relates to paintings made years ago. In this painting you see an African-American man, standing in a position of power and security. This painting and others are part of a collection that the artist decided to call "The World Stage", where he traveled to different countries taking pictures of different people, which later he transferred to the canvas.…
Personally, the answer to his question is quite simple. Cultural artifacts are considered art, and all art is up to interpretation. Lopez himself describes the possibilities of how the sculptors of the horse could have first seen horses, and how nearly each part of the body was sculpted perfectly to scale. Lopez spent hours just watching the shadow of the horse move, looking at its specific detail and finally came to the conclusion that it was an individual horse, not just one representation of the horse.…

Figure 3: News, 1991, Jan Senbergs I was also attracted to another painting, News (1991) by Jan Senbergs (see Figure 3). Due to its large size and appealing colour pallet of blue and browns, this piece at first, appeared quite aesthetically attractive. However, as I viewed the work longer and read into the piece, I saw the not so pleasant, surreal mechanical forms and the harsh brushstrokes that were created by the textured and expressively applied paint. These elements created a feeling of discomfort within me. This artwork was supposedly painted in response to the Gulf War of 1990-1991, where Iraq invaded Kuwait (Australian War Memorial, 2017).…
VDread Scott artwork “what is the proper way to display the US flag?” In the exhibit, they place the flag the United States flag on the floor and they have a book to so people can write their opinion. Above the book, there is a picture of South Korea students burning the flag. “President Bush Sr. declared What is the Proper Way… “disgraceful” and the entire US Congress denounced this work as they passed legislation to “protect the flag.”(Dread Scott.net) Dread Scott had the courage to display his artwork the way he did. I think it was brave of him to display it in the form he did. His artwork is controversial because in order for people to write there thought they have to be willing to step on the flag.…
Located at Duke Hall on main side of campus, is a painting called “Lifetime Piled Up” by Elizabeth Cunningham. When first noting Elizabeth work, I couldn’t help but stare at the color scheme of the drawing. When first glancing at her work, I had this feeling of darkness that surrounded the drawing. As I move up from the bottom to the top of the drawing one would feel a since of light. After analyzing the artwork by it’s color scheme, I came to a conclusion (opinionated of course) that the theme was “When there is darkness there is light”. Each time a shade of dark was made there is always a strain of light that always follows it. Now I get that the drawing is just black and white but if you look towards the bottom of the picture you can really…
Down for the Count is a heavy work that is used to depict the times of the Great Depression. Fletcher Martin was very distinct about what he wanted us to see and how he wanted us to see it. The subject matter is surrounded by supporting details such as the color, light, space, and also the size and scale.…
One of the most influential artists of the Modern Period of art was James Whistler. Whistler was an accomplished printer and painter and a brief background of the painter allows us to understand Whistler, and why more than any artist of his time, he would be attracted to Japanese woodblock prints called Ukiyo-e. It is also essential to understand the essence of Ukiyo-e, Japanese aesthetics and its migration to the Western world. Additionally, a chronological selection of Whistler’s works must be analyzed showing how he integrated the lessons he learned from his exposure to Ukiyo-e.…
John Davis (16 September, 1936 – 17 October, 1999) was an Australian sculptor, renowned and celebrated as the pioneer of Environmental art, and as an Australian player in the modern art movement: Arte Povera. Arte Povera was an Italian artistic movement introduced in the 1960’s, a time of civil unrest, in which artists took to political radicalism, attacking the morale and value of the government and major industries, challenging whether art, as an expression of emotion and thought, could still fit and exist in our modern world.…
This piece of art by Richard Watson is based on the story of Pharaoh and the Israelites from the Bible verse, Exodus 14:8. The main focus of the artwork is the hardship of people of color during White supremacy, and it is compared to the suffering Israelites faced under Pharaoh. This piece is an oil painting on a wood panel, and it is a single media brushwork with a combination of images that emphasize black life.…
Travelers among Mountains and Streams is comprised of several design elements. Form, leading lines, and shape. These design elements move the eye throughout the painting in a continuous interaction between the elements. Each section is well balanced and rich in content. The large mountain in the foreground sets the foundation for the painting by serving as a barrier, keeping the viewers eyes from leaving the page. The area showing the travelers moving in the stream sets a sense of motion, engaging the eye to travel through the painting. The grand scale of all the elements inspire the viewer to be transported into the realm of fantasy promoted by Northern Song painters. The painting takes on a naturalistic feel that is derived from the combination of paint, ink, and silk. The people and mules moving through the stream bring a sense of scale to the painting. They are an important element in that they are in direct comparison to the large Mountain. The helps promote the idea that there is something bigger than all of of us and that humans are somehow spiritually connected to the earth. An important idea that Northern Song Artist aspired to communicate through ere work. The painting is done in a realistic approach yet is not set in a specific place further enhancing the dream like quality meant to promote spiritual communication and enlightenment. This interpretation is about the balance between the countryside and mans attempt to conquer it brought to life in the form of a painting by Fan Kuan. In the painting the small humans are engulfed by the enormous mountains giving the effect of unattainability, yet the human spirit to conquering the elements arises out of the need explore. The human and animals traveling through the stream give the…
What makes a piece of art art? Is it the creation itself or is it a combination of elements that make a piece a good piece of art. Artist use elements to add depth and meaning to the pieces they create. In this essay you will be comparing and contrasting two different types of paintings. The same subject matter but different ideas of the same subject. I will be writing about The Last Supper, which was painted by Giampietrino, after Leonardo da Vinci. He used oil on canvas while painting the piece of art. The year that Giampietrino painted this picture was in 1520. Another work of art that I will be writing about will be The Last supper by Francesco Fontebasso. He painted this picture in 1762 using oil on canvas. As you can see from both types of arts, that they were both painted on oil on canvas and both have the same subject matter which is the last supper that Jesus Christ had. To both of these painting’s in person, you can go to the Royal academy of Arts in London to see the Giampietrino piece and Fontebasso’s piece is found in Museum Fund of the State Hermitage in St Petersburg.…
