During the late 1800s, France was an undeniable force in the engineering world. It would turn out, however, that America was the country which would succeed in constructing the marvelous Panama Canal. The location was chosen as a means of joining the Atlantic and Pacific oceans--an action that was sure to open up new trade opportunities by limiting sail time and difficulties for men of the sea. It proved to be a sluggish effort from the get-go, much to the French’s distaste, as locating the optimal digging location proved to be no easy feat.…
Political problems stood in the way, though, because Panama was a province of Colombia. When Colombia did not agree to the canal, the United States used its military presence to help Panama to rebel against Colombia and gain independence. After Panama became independent, the United States got Panama’s permission to build the canal. Construction of the Panama Canal was one of the world’s greatest engineering accomplishments. Work began in 1904 and took 10 years.…

However in 1848 they couldn’t pay for it and lost their rights regarding the railroad. In 1848 the California gold rush occurred. This alone caused heavy traffic across the Isthmus of Panama. Later that year in December, U.S Company, the Panama railroad company negotiated a new contract with Bogota, Colombia to build the railroad across the Isthmus in 6 years. Part of the contract said that the trip would be guaranteed in less than 12 hours. The railroad was built and completed the journey in 4 ½ hours. But Matthew Fontaine Maury, leading U.S. government scientist wrote to congress that the railroad Isthmus of Panama will lead to the construction of a ship canal between the two oceans, for a railroad can’t do the business which commerce will require…
Frederick Edwin Church’s “Niagara” uses framing, scaling, and omission to demonstrate that he considered nature far more important than civilization. Church painted the viewer closer to the falls and suspended them above the ledge to intensify the greatness of the falls. He painted the falls from the Canadian shore while other painters before him did not; 180 degrees behind the painting there lies a city. The horizontal form of the painting helps to demonstrate the grandness of the falls. He uses a notable depiction of light, streaks of white, and water to emphasize the rushing power of the water. He adds the rainbow in his painting to guide the audience to look directly at the falls. He wants the onlooker to only pay attention to the falls…

It is believable that John Vanderlyn, in his painting Landing of Columbus, was trying to portray the success of Columbus and his crew. Columbus heroic stance and elegant expression are made all the more impressive in comparison to the native people who witness the event. The Native Americans are naked, fearful or subservient, bowing down before the explorer in awe and reverence. The symbols of empire are shown in the heroic explorer with his Christian crosses and steel swords symbolizing the significance in the power of civilization. In 1836 of June, Congress had commissioned John Vanderlyn to paint the Landing of Columbus. About eleven years later the painting was hung in the Rotunda by January 1847. Expansion was an overwhelming preoccupation in nineteenth-century America, but it was by no means the only cultural preoccupation. The subject of the painting, foregrounding the ambiguous meeting of two cultures, provided a space for artists to work out many central issues, for example, how to reconcile Indian Removal with notions of the Noble Savage. Another way is how to remake a country torn apart by sectional strife. The following settlements and expansions span the period from 1835 to 1912. Americans had a chaotic eighty-year period that witnessed the filling of Americas geographical borders, the bloody anguish of the Civil War, the horror of slavery in America, the overthrow of Native peoples, and many more events pertaining to the expansion. Vanderlyns painting contains images of contact between European explorers and Native Americans. He clearly shows a representation of what many of the settlements contained and how frightened the Natives were.…
