The study of literature "is the place—there is no other in most schools—the place wherein the chief matters of concern are particulars of humanness—individual human feeling, human response, and human time, as these can be known through the written expression (at many literary levels) of men living and dead, and as they can be discovered by student writers seeking through words to name and compose and grasp their own experience. English [that is, literature] in sum is about my distinctness and the distinctness of other human beings. Its function, like that of some books called 'great,' is to strive at once to know the world through art, to know what if anything he uniquely is, and what some brothers uniquely are. The instruments employed are the imagination, the intellect, and texts or events that rouse the former to life . . . . [T]he goal . . . is to expand the areas of the human world—areas that would not exist but for art—with which individual man can feel solidarity and coextensiveness." My first reason we should study great work of literature is to explore other cultures and beliefs. Most books in the work talk about the culture” how they live” “what’s it like”. When we read we explore worlds in our head like their beliefs. We didn’t know that much about it until you start to read about it. You can also experience the culture when you’re reading literature.…

Literature is any form of expressing human’s simple to complex experiences that blend, combined and applied into words, well-chosen and arranged. It is full of thoughts, feelings, dreams, sorrows, aspirations and grief of human expressions in every harmonious way of expressions. It is a choice, choice of expressing everything without the hesitation from any hindrances. It is just like entering into a voyage, not to find good fortune but to have pleasure and satisfaction. It can be compared to choice of writing. Humans are writing not because of compliance but because they want to express something for the sake of self- satisfaction. They are not reading because they want to learn a lot but because to feel enjoyment while reading. It is not like going abroad for good but because of the experience.…

With the power invested upon it, literature reflects norms and values, revealing the ethos of one’s culture, the pains and pangs of history, the bloodshed preserved in books, the processes of political and class struggles, social facts, the beauty of the people but more than that, the beauty of their stories. As it mirrors human actions, it often presents a picture of what people think, say and do in the society or what society as a whole does in shaping the values of its people. Hence, the writer of a particular piece of literature is experiencing the culture, living in it, breathing with it. In this light, any student of a literature class is considered lucky to have tasted a slice of life from varied places without having to spend a plane ticket – a journey inscribed in pages. And right now, another passport is safely tucked in my palm. Like the persona in this novel and the title itself, with keen eyes, brave heart and the soul of a wanderer, I am going to enter a secluded place where truths remain frozen in history books and pains of long ago keep its inhabitants forever chained in agony. This line taken from the advertisement of Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez’s Magic Sing would be the best starting point of this paper, “Tara na, byahe tayo ng ating makita ang ganda ng Pilipinas.” This is a content analysis of the novel, Viajero by F. Sionil Jose.…
