Art Appreciation Essay
Artists like Juan De Flores and Audrey Flack were similar in their realistic artwork. They both reflect things like social class, or the religious world. Although some of the same items and meanings can be seen throughout both of their paintings the techniques used differ. Their religious beliefs seen in their work about life, resemble the same thing. “Vanitas” and “Wheel of Fortune,” both show skulls meaning death. In Vanitas paintings the skull is the universal symbol for death. In “Vanitas” certain items such as flowers and books and in “Wheel of Fortune,” items such as the photographed women smiling, all represent wealth, beauty and knowledge. In each painting you will see some sort of clock meaning that life is unstoppable. The differences between the two paintings can be depicted easily. The painting “Vanitas” shows more religious aspects than the painting, “Wheel of Fortune.” In the painting, “Vanitas” a large picture which has god showing the Last Judgment is shown. This signifies the judging of what happens to each person after eternal life. For example, either to be sent to hell or heaven after you die based off of your sins. “Vanitas” is a painting that illustrates such a past dark life. It portrays the unknowing of the future. However, the “Wheel of Fortune” painting has lots of bright colors. Daily life is shown throughout this painting by the use of a calendar and clock. In the “Wheel of Fortune” Flack emphasizes the use of card decks to incorporate gambling. Juan De Flores was very much influenced by artists from the seventeenth century in Spain. He was famous for his dramatic style of color and light. “Vanitas” is painted with oil on canvas as oppose to “Wheel of Fortune” which is acrylic on canvas.

The emphasis in this painting is her face and her smile, her pale face against the dark background really stand out, her rosy cheeks and big smile make it easy to spot across the room.
