Art nouveau, which simply means ‘New Art’, started around the 1890’s right till the First World War and was an artistic movement which started throughout most of Europe and eventually spread to the USA and the rest of the world. The name was taken from a shop in Paris called “la Maison de’l art nouveau”. It was an attempt to create a new style of art and to abandon the Victorian styles of the 19th century.
This movement was said to be influenced by two very different styles of art, first the Arts and Crafts movement led by William Morris whose art was also a reaction against the style of art at that time and the conditions they were made in. The second influence was the new discovery of Japanese art in Europe, which swept European artists away and eventually become the beginnings of art nouveau.
The most used theme of Art nouveau was symmetrical lines based on the parts of a plant; the leaf, flower etc; the other theme was female figures with flowing hair. These themes were mainly used in the decorative side of art such as jewellery, metal work and interior designs but then were eventually used for graphic design (creation of posters etc.)
