Sitting on a colorful rug and listening to my pre-kindergarten teacher, who happened to be my aunt, read books from Dr. Seuss was first memory of learning to read. She would read word by word slowly and show us what she was reading and of course she would show off the pictures. She finished reading and now we are sitting at our tiny tables learning how to write alphabet and numbers. Those are the first memories I have of learning to read and write. Starting kindergarten I finally compose sentences though spelling was no my forte. Throughout elementary and middle school my writing improved because now I finally knew what the parts of speech were and the grammar rules that go along with writing. Grammar and parts of speech took a lot of practice and we reviewed almost every year. During those years I mainly learned the basics and the structure for writing. My experiences in high school are my most vivid of memories when it comes to reading, writing, and communicating. My freshman year of high school I had an English teacher that had a big personality and made English class interesting and often unpredictable. She would break out into a song or dance in order to explain things such as a hyperbole. She was the first teacher to peak my interest in reading and writing. Sophomore year was also a turning point for my writing because I had to write a lengthy research paper on Macbeth by William Shakespeare. I learned that I have trouble staying focused on my thesis at times and my wording can often be awkward. I was thankful that quite a bit of drafting was involved and my final paper was a huge improvement. Junior year was a great year for my interest in reading because I read East of Eden by John Steinbeck, which was a great book. Reading East of Eden made me realize how important annotating is and that rereading the text may be necessary if you did not pick up a good understanding the first time around. Senior year was an interesting one because of my expository reading and writing class. One of the hardest things I did was writing a group essay. We were in a group before we started the essay then when we started to draft we discovered we had different opinions on the topic. Communication was key and we had to figure out a compromise so that we could all get our point across. High school had a huge contribution to my literacy narrative. Over the years I have learned that I comprehend text well but have trouble staying focused and getting my point across clearly which are aspects that I would like to improve on. It is a goal of mine to improve my skills of focusing on the thesis and be state my thoughts clearly without beating around the bush and rambling on. I have come along way throughout the years but there is always room for improvement.

I get aware of reading and writing skills at very early age, as I wanted to be successful. I started doing my all homework on time, passing my all classes, and doing more research. Some of the earliest reading memories I have come from reading flashcards with basic words on them, reading closed captions on cartoons (something I still utilize to this day,) and being read to by my mother and preschool teachers. A memory I remember in vivid detail (which is one of my earliest memories) is sitting in the lap of one of the preschool assistants (Jan) as she was reading to me. I do not remember what book it was, however, I do remember I was wearing a sweatshirt and my pink snowboots. I have a picture of this in a preschool scrapbook. Another one of my early reading memories is watching Timon and Pumbaa and singing along to the theme song as I read the closed captions. My mother came in when she heard me singing the word “philosophy” and I gave her a look that said “What is that face for?”…

For me, learning to read and write was long and felt like a drag to me; I took reading and writing for granted and never thought of the great advantages that every book had. It all started at home when I was five years old and my mom was teaching me how to write my name. In my head, I had trouble understanding on what I wrote but as far as I know that was my name. Finally the day came and it was time for me to go to school. I was scared; I did not know where I was, and I did not know a single word in English. There was no way my mom would stick me in an English classroom. They moved me to a Spanish one; there I had a more clear idea of what I was learning. The teacher was a sweet, calm lady; she had patience with bad writing, to this day I have not figured out whether she understood it or not. Once I learned my ABC’s here came the small words of animals and things like for example “oso” which means bear in Spanish. Learning to read and write seamed so boring. I had to sit down and do homework which required my attention, but I preferred to draw and play. Learning was torture; I would read very slowly, even when I tried to read those small picture books for small kids, I was useless by that time.…

Reading was fun when it was newly acquired skill. I was excited to read to my parents when they returned home from work. I remember reading my favorite book series by R.L. Stein (Goosebumps) while in the second and third grades. The series was about hauntings that affected teenagers. I remember my favorite book in the series was Piano Lessons Can Be Murder. I could relate to that because at the time, I was taking piano lessons.…

I feel my desire and interest in writing grew dim once I reached middle school and had to write about stories and novels I did not find interesting, causing me not to actively read these books in the first place. That feeling of being distant from the material covered in my middle school classes carried over into high school and it did not help that I had the same strict English teacher for all four years of high school. Although I don’t remember exactly how I learned to read, I guess it sort of came to me as a little child when my parents used to read me prayers and stories from the Bible. In middle school, reading was essential in getting a good grade for English with the "Accelerated Reader" system being implemented at our school. Basically, it was a online program where you would be able to take tests on books once you have read them, and each book had a certain amount of points based on its difficulty and length. Every semester, you needed to have a certain amount of points in order to get an A in English, and I always made sure too reach the point goal every year. My parents are the main reason of my success, and I will be forever thankful for the books they made me read and also for my success of…

Writing has always been my most difficult part of English. Reading, on the other hand, is something I could do all day; however, with writing, I grimace just thinking about it. It was not that I did not have anything to say, because I actually have quite a bit to say. I just could never figure out how to phrase what I had to say in just right way on the page. My mom taught me to read and write at a young age. After that, I would devour any book that I could get my hands on. However, I have had trouble with writing since it became more than just my alphabet and numbers.…

The most vivid, earliest moment I have of learning to write and read was when I was in kindergarten. I recall this because this was the year I met the person who I thought created a poems and rhyme book my mother use to read out loud to my baby sister and myself. I remember every night before bed, it was this blue book that my mother use to get off the bookshelf and read. This was the only way my sister and I would go to sleep. The first day of my kindergarten school, when I walked into the class room I saw that same book And a whole bunch more books. I was like ‘’WOW!!!’’ I must be in book heaven. I never saw so many books. I mean, they were all shapes, color and texture. At the time I didn’t know they were called Nursery Rhymes until I began learning more about it in my school house. There was a particular nursery rhyme that stood out to me then and it still does today because of a certain funny reason I will explain later on in my essay. As my mom and Mrs. Woolabee (whom was my kindergarten teacher) use to read to me, they allowed me to read after them and we also use to act out the stories. Their voices and what they did for some reason seemed to be the same. I don’t know if it was because I was a little girl and was just so amazed on how they both made their voices sound, how they both made me laugh or the fact they held me close as they read to me. I knew the difference from my mom verses the teacher. I guess when you are little and notice both of these females care for you, as a small child you feel a certain way. I recall during home time and school time I use to draw the pictures as they read to me. I remember writing small words like and, up, did, as I learned this rhyme. They use to read to me Jack and Jill. I still remember it. ‘’Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water Jack fell down and broke his crown and Jill came tumbling after. Up got Jack, and home did trot as fast as he could caper. He went to bed and…

I think from 6th grade my confidence in writing has increased tremendously. I would say writing is easier for me than reading because in writing you can just put your thoughts on paper. Writing can be difficult for me if I don’t know what to write about or how to start it out. But as I started writing more I got to enjoy it more and it came easy to me. What helps me be a better writer is using correct grammar when texting. A lot of people now days do not use correct grammar when texting to someone. And a lot of us usually put what we say in our texts onto a formal piece of writing. My sixth grade teacher actually is the one who inspired me in writing. She would always give me pointers on how I could make my essay better and more appealing to other readers. I had other great English teachers but I think my sixth grade one made a greater impact on me in writing. My strength as a writer is putting thoughts on paper and turning it into something understandable. Like for instance, if I had an essay I would just jot things down on a paper and then just add things to that. Get started with the small things and you will have bigger things to think about while writing. There are some writings that I thought could have been better. When I was in 8th grade I didn’t do so well on my essay and got a poor score. Eventually I re edited my paper and I got a much better score afterwards. I think my problem was not…
