Arthur Leigh Allen: The Zodiac Killer
One man responsible for several individuals being murdered, taunting letters being sent to police, living in constant fear of what this killer would do next: sounds like a plot line to a serial killer movie. To the people of west coast California, however, this was very real. One unidentified individual was on a killing spree and was enjoying it too. This man, known as the Zodiac Killer, was a mystery to the police department, but theories were brought up about possible suspects. Even though some people believe Arthur Leigh Allen was the infamous Zodiac Killer, through eye witness accounts and forensic proof, it can be proven that the Zodiac Killer was actually Earl Van Best, Jr. In the 1960s, murder plagued the coast of California. These murders were committed by an unidentified serial …show more content…

The scientist, Michael Wakshull, was approached by the son of Earl Van Best, Jr. to help him prove the latter’s father was indeed the Zodiac Killer. Wakshull took up this task and used handwriting samples from Earl Van Best, Jr.’s marriage certificate and compared them to samples from letters from the Zodiac sent to the papers. For example, he placed “-est” from “Best” on the marriage certificate to “-est” from “best” in a letter entitled “Exorcist” in comparison to each other. This evidence shows that the two handwriting samples are very similar. They share a similar style and slant that make it appear that Earl Van Best, Jr. is the Zodiac Killer. The evidence clearly does not end there, sample wise. Wakshull proved that the same thing occurs with several other comparisons between samples of writings. From these observations, the forensic scientist came to the conclusion that, in his professional opinion, there is a “strong probability” that the letters were written by the same person who filled out the marriage certificate. Which essentially concludes that Earl Van Best, Jr. is the Zodiac Killer

During the Ripper murders, the divisional police surgeon, Dr. George Phillips used what is considered to be deductive reasoning in inferring the criminal characteristics of the Ripper by examining the physical evidence. Phillips would carefully inspect the wounds of a victim from a particular offender (The Ripper) to infer the criminal’s personality, behavior, and interactions between the victim and the offender. As such, the offender’s behavior and characteristics are revealed in the physical evidence of the wound. We now call this process wound pattern analysis. Dr. Phillips noted that injuries to one of the Ripper victims, Annie Chapman, “indicated what he felt was evidence of professional skill and knowledge in their execution.” This meaning…

The zodiac killer may be dead, in prison or out there living his life as a free man. All the killings that were supposedly committed by the zodiac killer may not have been by the same person, and this suggests that there were more than one killer. The publicity that the Zodiac killer developed in the period 1968-69 could have encouraged a rise of other killers who would impersonate the original killer. However, there were letters after most murders, and these letters were written in the same hand. However, this does not nullify the possibilities of a second killer.…

It has been suggested recently by Gary Stewart, who even wrote a book on the matter, that his biological father was the Zodiac Killer. Though Gary’s father, Earl Van Best Jr., greatly resembles the police composite sketch of the famous killer, he does not match the large, heavyset body type described by the victims (Bergara). Other than his close resemblance, there is not any substantial evidence pointing to him as the killer. Another prime suspect in this case, named Lawrence “Kane” Kaye, has a good bit more evidence than that of the case for Earl Van Best Jr. He is said to have lived near some of the victims and crime scenes, and even worked with one of the victims. Kane had also sustained a brain injury in a car accident in 1962 and his psychologist said that he was “losing the ability to control self-gratification” (Bergara). Later, Kathleen Johns, who claims to have gotten a ride with the Zodiac Killer before managing to escape once he told her he was going to kill her and her child, identified Kane as the culprit (Bergara). However, many say she is not a particularly credible source due to the different versions she has told in the years following the incident (Montaldo). Though a compelling argument, this theory also fails…

Who was the deadliest killer of the late twentieth century? The Zodiac Killer operated in northern California during the late twentieth century, killing at least five known victims. The killer was able to send letters to newspapers without being caught. Many were suspected to be the famous Zodiac Killer, but nobody has ever been identified to be one of the most well-known killers of all time. The crime of murder has been known to be present in our society since the early 1600 's. Historians who have done extensive research on the topic of murder have found evidence of murder occurring in Ancient Rome and moving on through the centuries. One of the first known examples in modem times of, what would later be termed a "serial killer", was Jack the Ripper, who killed and mutilated five prostitutes in the East End of London in 1888 (Wilson, 1990). The term "serial killer" came into general use in American society in the 1980 's as law enforcement officials began to classify different types of murders.…
