One prominent scholar named Stark in the past had opened up new data to the author Reginald Bibby, the author of this book, giving him his new book idea: the reality of religious polarization. The book has been divided up into 9 chapters, all very informative, coming from a polarized lens, focusing on all aspects of those who are religious, and those who are not.…
General John Sullivan was in control of many things. The weather was not one of them. Neither was the Comte d’Estaing. He was the French Admiral in charge of the fleet sent to aid General Sullivan in re-taking Newport, Rhode Island from the British. No one questioned General Sullivan’s bravery. A goodly number questioned his diplomacy.…

Appeal to Ethos and Logos, Andrew Mack’s credibility remained not well-informed, sensible, or fair since he did not provide enough knowledge of Muslims and their religion, Islam. As well as, he did not strongly attest that Islam is not a violent, but peaceful religion using statistical facts. Also, he was not fair to his opposition, because he presumed that all religions exist the same, as in they are violent and not just Islam. Which made people who are Christianity, Buddhism, and other religions feel offended. Mack wrote and publish this article for his hostile audience, because some people may agree with him, and some may disagree with him.…
Religion is one of the pillars of society. It can be used to rule the common with fair and just practice or it can be used for a rulers own self-improvement and greed. Many times over the course of world history religion is misconstrued and leads individuals to believe self-interrupted version of its holy text. Two of the most prominent religions in world history Islam and Christianity were used to empower those in high authority. This point is made clear with the documents discussed, and show readers that religion is nothing more than tool for the intellect to take advantage of the common masses of society.…
Religion is more than individual faith; it is an impactful orientation to a purpose far greater than one person. Long stated how religion is “an orientation in the ultimate sense, that is, how one comes to terms with the ultimate significance of one’s place in the world” (p. 7). It is often within the realm of religion that people find power in their own…
S. Freud’s The Future Illusion and P. Tillich’s Religion as a Dimension in Man’s Spiritual Life carry on about an important question of what religion really is, what is its meaning in a cultural, psychological and scientific aspect and how it relates to a society and an individual. In this paper I will try to prove through an analysis and comparison of both texts that although their approach to the subject is different they both regard religion as an important aspect of human life. Freud in Illusion touches on things that to some may be an unquestionable truths; a meaning of life, a reason to be a good citizen - a good human being. Freud strips religion of its “holiness” but not of its power over a culture and a human life. He argues that religion in its essence is nothing more than an illusion - a wishful thinking based on a subconscious hope for a reward (the afterlife). According to Freud, religion is an aspect of culture - civilization, defending us against nature and each other. Civilization is a necessity that was socially constructed in order to explain and control the unknown and scary forces of the world but more importantly to cage our primal desires of: incest, murder, cannibalism which lay deeply in our unconscious. Therefore, to save humanity civilization created laws. At first the forces of nature were given human characteristics to make the assimilation easier and simpler to comprehend. The so called totemism was clear and understandable serving a purpose of control and protection from the environment and ourselves. But who would obey the laws if there was no fear of punishment for doing wrong and a reward for doing good. That is when religion came in handy.…
According to the linguistic roots of the term religion re-, means “again” and lig-, means “join” or “connect”. The word religion proposes the joining of the human world to the sacred world (Molloy, 2010). In my personal point of view religion is very important because it allows us to believe that there is a God who loves us and wants us to be happy. There are different types of religions and none of them are wrong if they lead people to a life of love, joy, compassion, and service. The question of why religions exist is evidently because it serves as human needs (Molloy, 2010). One of the first needs of humans is having a meaning when it comes to dealing with our mortality. It is very common that as individuals we try to look for a purpose of why different situations happen in life especially when we have no control over them. The religion we belong to can give us comfort to some level in our life. There are some elements known to involve a religion regardless of which one it is which will be discussed in this paper. Also this paper will mention the relationships with the divine, sacred time, sacred space or the natural world, and the relationship with each other.…
e 1780s, delegate James Monroe was one of the leading proponents of the Northwest Ordinance passed in 1787. He also participated in the Virginia ratifying convention, and although he opposed Constitution for reasons similar to those of Patrick Henry and other fellow Virginians, he was elected senator from Virginia in 1790. Monroe subsequently served as minister to France under Presidents Washington and Jefferson and was instrumental in negotiating the Louisiana purchase with Napoleon’s government.…
Religion is one of the complex issues in the world. The aspects of religion diversity elaborate on how the society is diverse, which should be embraced. One of the debatable issues in the world today is whether religion causes war in the world. Other belief that religion is important in society and does not cause war. On the other hand, there are people who believe that religion causes war. Religion entails a collection of world views on humanity, beliefs, and cultural systems that focus on the order of existence. For thousands of years it has been shown that the belief in a God or gods has been vital to flourishing civilizations. It may be the under lying cause of many conflicts but these instances relies on the principles and beliefs of the religion and who practices it, such as negatively influenced extremists. Religion has brought contentment to the lives of many and has unified cultures all over the world, and to close this essay with, religion is “the greatest of all means for the establishment of order in the world and for the peaceful contentment of all that dwell therein” (by Baha’i U’llah, a Persian noblemen). The world needs a change but the questions remains, in what? Should religion cease to exist or should it be the main focus of society’s…
In the case of Physician Assisted Suicide, I believe only in certain, extreme, and clearly defined situations should a doctor be allowed to prescribe a drug to terminate a patient’s life. The role of a practicing medical doctor, or a physician, is defined by Mosby’s Dental Dictionary as a practitioner of medicine; one lawfully engaged in the practice of medicine. The essential word in this definition is lawful – physicians must act in a manner that is ethical to their practice and lawful to the country in which they are practicing. In most countries, murder and suicide are unlawful; therefore for a doctor to commit such an act would be considered as crime. For this reason, I stand by my belief that doctors should only prescribe life terminating drugs in certain cases, which I will explain below.…

A religion can be seen as a unified system of beliefs and practices which are relative to sacred things and beliefs (Giddens 1972, p.224). It can shape ones thoughts and feelings and gives people a sense of hope and something to believe in. All three main sociologist writers Karl Marx, Max Weber and Emile Durkheim offer different perspectives on religion and how important it is to society. Some of the theorists chose to have a positive view whilst others argue the unimportance of religion. This essay attempts to discover which theorist has the most accurate perspective of religion in modern times. This is done by firstly explaining the basic ideas regarding to religion put forward by Marx, Weber and Durkheim. Then both Marx's and Durkheim's thought will be compared and contrasted in order to determine the differences and similarities between their ideas. Finally, it will be explained which one of the theorists views and ideas are the most relevant to contemporary times and why.…
In his book The Intra-religious Dialogue, Raimon Panikkar seeks to tap into our daily humanistic encounters through teachings, discussion, questions and exploration as a basis of religious dialogue. Panikkar sets forth a guidebook of sorts in which the reader can better understand his/her set of beliefs and faiths as well as set out on a personal mission to encounter the religious practices of people around the world without prejudice or preconceived notions. I think the main issue set forth by Panikkar is to guide us along the path towards the “realization of human destiny” and provide us with the tools to higher comprehension of all faiths and beliefs.…
