Through the Looking Glass:
A Comparative Analysis of the Career Patterns of Rural Female Administrators in Saskatchewan and Texas Females in North America have fought long and hard to be viewed as equals in the workplace with their male counterparts. For the most part, females have gained equal rights in almost every aspect of North American society. However, Dawn C. Wallin would argue that there is still distinction between men and women in the field of educational administration, particularly in rural areas. Wallin’s Through the Looking Glass: A Comparative Analysis of Career Patterns of Rural Female Administrators in Saskatchewan and Texas provides compelling insight into the lives of female administrators both in Canada and in the Southern United States. Wallin makes use of surveys and statistics to paint a vivid picture of the situation of the rural female educational administrator. Occasionally Wallin relies too heavily upon complicated statistics without giving an interpretation of the implications, which may be confusing for the reader. However, Wallin’s weaknesses in presentation are outweighed by her strength of evidence that suggests female administrators in rural areas are in a challenging role, but one that is full of unique opportunities for them as women. Wallin has had a passion for women’s issues, especially women’s issues in education, for years. Wallin is the Associate Professor of Educational Administration at the University of Manitoba, as well as being the Associate Dean of the Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Education Program (University of Manitoba, 2010).
