A Critical Review of Kasiyarno, 2014, American Dream: American Hegemonic Culture and its Implication to the World, Humaniora, Vol. 26, no. 1, pp 13-21.
Using American Studies perspective, this study reveals the connection between the American Dream as preceding subject, a hegemonic culture as interceding subject and world culture as the proceeding subject. The author argues that the American Dream has already influenced people in the world by spreading a hegemonic culture through the moment of globalization then it changes the cultural identity of people outside the US, which called by Americanization.
In this article, the use of language is already well understood. The parts of this article fit logically; Introduction, Conceptual Framework, Hegemonic Culture in American Studies, Cultural Globalization: the Engine of American Dream, Americanization: When American Dream Changes the World. The author structure the parts of the article well, so the reader easily understood what the article’s about. The evidence used such as statistic’s data about based on survey are also used in this article to support the author’s point of view.
The arguments are clearly stated. However, there are so many expert’s arguments to support this article, but the way the author presents expert’s arguments excessively, made the author’s arguments blurred. This article is relevant in this globalization era today. However the concept of the American Dream itself is improper with today conditions of America. The American Dream as American Hegemonic Culture has successfully Americanized the world. Globalization as the engine of the American Dream has spread values and hope of success through pop culture. This idea has made America as a superpower between all countries in the world.
