"As Good As It Gets"
In the movie "As Good As It Gets" there are three main characters with three different lives brought together out of need. Melvin, played by Jack Nicholson, is an obsessive compulsive who speaks what is on his mind. Carol, played by Helen Hunt, is a single mother trying to make it in a world that has not been kind to her. Simon, played by Greg Kinnear, is a gay artist who plays the role of the victim. The movie revolves around Melvin's life and the people he comes in contact with everyday. Melvin lives next door to Simon and goes to the diner everyday where Carol works. In the movie, the three main characters Melvin, Carol and Simon are influenced by perception which greatly limits their lives.

Stereotyping was very important to the development of the characters and the plot of this story. Melvin is obsessive compulsive which means he has to have everything in order in his life. The OCD stereotype would be that the world revolves around him, and no one really matters as long as everything is in order. All of the other characters in this story see Melvin in this light and are surprised every time he does something kind and selfless, but they are quickly brought back to reality when he makes selfish comments to justify his actions. One example was when he told the maid that he would walk the dog and a few other things for Simon while he was recovering, she complimented him by saying he was a nice man. Melvin then said, "…sell crazy somewhere else, we're all stocked up here." Carol is a single mother of a sick child who has to work for everything she gets. Her stereotype is that of a martyr. She has no time for anyone or anything else because she has so many responsibilities. Everything is about her child, his needs, and her work. The stereotype of the gay man is a victim. He is portrayed as very sensitive, stylish, misunderstood, and oppressed. His assumption is that people believe that he wants to impose his lifestyle on

The black boys. They look, speak and act like the generic sixties black man and are the most stereotypical characters in the book. They play their part and are treated as one would expect, stereotypes are simple. The black boys always do the same job every day, and every day they're subject to the same racist comments, Sam, Coon, it's always something. The only one who seems to really break the boundaries of stereotyping them would be the Big Nurse herself. She's the only main character who never uses any slang or slurs,…

The movie that I choose to watch was “As Good as it Gets” by James L. Brooks. The character that I will be discussing is Melvin Udall played by Jack Nicholson. Melvin Udall is a novelist from New York that is working on another one of his books. To his readers, Udall may seem to be a normal person however; he is struggling to do everything right in his life. He has the symptoms of a person dealing with obsessive-compulsive disorder. This is exemplified by his obsession with developing a loving relationship. He has not found love of his own, and that is why he is so obsessed with eating at the same restaurant in the same seat with the same waitress because this is the only steady interaction he has with another person. When the waitress is not at work one day it causes Udall to realize that he has a problem and goes to visit his therapist but since he neglected to schedule an appointment he is turned away which causes more anxiety. With the anxiety of not having his usually scheduled meal at the restaurant, he finds out where the waitress lives to go talk to her and tell her how she messed up his day. When Udall arrives at the waitresses home, Udall find out that the reason Carol was not at work is because her son suffers from a sever case of asthma that causes him to be really sickly. Though Udall had at one point made rude comments about Carol’s son’s health he later pays for the young boy to be seen by a good doctor, which happens to be his publisher’s husband. The only stipulation is that Carol return to work in order for the medical bills to be paid. Paying the medical bills is a nice gesture to Carol and she thanks Udall but he feels that her thank you letter is unnecessary; because it was something he had to do for him to have his regular meal. In another part of the movie when some strangers assault Udall’s neighbor, Simon, Udall is asked by Simon’s art manager to take Simon to…

The movie showed instances of gender stereotyping most strongly. Starting with the women characters, there is a laundry list of notable instances, but I will only name a few. We can start with Azteca, Z's friend and fellow "worker". While Z is a typical male who is competitive and wants to move up in the world, Azteca maintains a somewhat "typical" female response. Instead of encouraging him, she tells Z to just smile, and happily accept his place, even if it is an awful life where he is to literally digging ditches his whole life. This example simply highlight the stereotype that women can, in effect, be "yes men", the phrase further illustrating the perception of weakness in females. Another time when this theme appeared was when the Queen was talking to her daughter, who was, in an old-school sort of way, betrothed to a man not of her choosing, the general. While the daughter complained, the Queen simply urged her to be complacent, and accept her fate, because it is "the best thing for everyone". Another instance, and one which I found particularly hilarious, was the woman wasp(no coincidence there, of course). When Z and the princess were in trouble, she insisted to her husband that he help them, because it was the humanitarian thing to do. It was presented in such a way that harkened to the proverbial housewife image, whereby the…

The movie As Good As It Gets sets in New York City where the main character Melvin Udall (Nicholson) finds his life turned upside down when he is left with the responsibility of taking care of his neighbour Simon’s dog while he is being hospitilized. He eats breakfast at the same table in the same reestaurant everyday and brings along his own platsic utensils due to his fear of germs and takes interest in his waitress Carol (Hunt) who appears to be the only person that tolerated his behaviors. Despite disliking the dog Verdell at the beginning, Melvin becomes emotionally attached to him and vuce versa. Melvin offers to pay Carol son’s medical expenses so that way she can return to work to serve him. She also accompanies Melvin along with Simon on a trip to Maltimore where Simon atempts to ask his parents for financial help after his assult and robbery. Simon moves in temoprarily with Melvin and encourages him to detest his love to Carol after she tells him that she no longer wants him to be a part of her life. A stereotype is a belief about the characteristic of a group which may or may not be negative and may or may not be accurate. It also involves categorizing people into groups according to various criteria and inferring that all people within a category possess the same traits. Claire and Phil both stereotype against Dylan because he is a teenager and a high school senior. Phil does not talk to Dylan in a proper manner, calling him “homes” and “playa”. He assumes that Dylan does not speak proper…

“Sometimes stereotyping can be used to help us make sense of this complicated world.” Heilbroner also mentions in his essay. Sometimes it can be hard for us to comprehend all the complexities of the world. There are so many different types of people that we actually put them into categories to try to help us understand them. Actually, putting people into categories kind of blinds us from seeing the true person. We categorize by race, occupation, physical appearance, and a…

So what are stereotypes anyway? Where did they come from and how did they come to be such a powerful, influential force in our society? Stereotypes are “over-generalized beliefs about people based on their membership in one of many social categories.” Stereotyping is a way of categorizing things and has both psychological and cognitive roots. From a cognitive standpoint, “quick and ready categorizations, even from momentary encounters, help us process huge amounts of information we receive about the people we…
