Discussion Reflection 3

The discussion the group and I had was about deciding whether or not Darl from the book As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner was Insane. Justin did not think Darl was insane. and I disagreed with his thinking. We believe that Darl did go insane, and his actions prove it. Darl Put his mother’s dead body into their barn and burned it down with the farm animals inside the barn.
Justin stated, “Darl is not crazy because he just wanted his mother at peace.” believed, it just happened that the farm animals were in the barn at the same time he was cremating his mother. I somewhat agree with what he’s saying. Darl did want his mother at rest. In my eyes that does not make you insane even though he was cremating her. The fact that he burned her with the animals in the barn made him insane. No human in their right mind would want to hurt animals, if they did then there has to be something wrong with the person. Darl had trauma from his mother’s death which makes it more of a reason for him to have gone insane. Maya stated “Darl was crazy because of what he did to his mother.” In my opinion it is somewhat unbelievable that someone would burn their mother’s dead body, but he thought that she had suffered enough. Darl had good intentions, but he couldn’t think straight. That’s also why he burned the animals with his mother. The fact that he burned his mother contributes to our decision of him being crazy but is only a little portion. Mellissa stated “there is even a quote in the book that says Darl went insane.” The quote in the book is; “Vardaman sits alone in the town square, thinking about how Darl went crazy, and stares at a lone cow.” There is another quote too, “Darl rants to himself as he is brought to burn animals. At the end of our discussion and I were not able to convince Justin that Darl had gone insane. We can conclude that Darl was insane, because

“Vardaman’s mother is a fish. I am a turtle. Jewel’s mother is a horse. Care now not, no. No care is was. Was is no care. Hahahahahahahaha. Addie Bundren is dead! Dewey Dell got pills in town. Hahahahahahaha”, Darl laughs. The doctor and nurses are fed up with Darl. The doctor sends the nurses out and a man of about forty enters the crowded cell. The man whispers into his colleague’s ear and then slowly exits the room. The man returns about five minutes later with a syringe, needle and a glass bottle filled with a yellow tinted liquid. Darl watches as the man measures the liquid. Yesyesyes. Hahaha. The doctor moves slowly towards Darl and injects the lethal liquid into Darl’s shaven head. He and his colleague watch as Darl’s eyelids flutter and as his body goes limp. The doctor calls in a nurse. “Fetch me a bag. Will you,…

His role in Darl's fate did not surprise me, however; Jewel is incredibly prideful and would resent Darl's knowing about his father. I think Jewel's foible is that he is unable to understand anything beyond himself, and lashes out against that which he does not understand. In answer to the prompt, I think the most tragic outcome is obvious- Darl's. Darl- a thoughtful, cerebral, empathetic introvert- had the unfortunate luck of being born to the backwards, bitter Bundren family. Prior to Addie's death, he was surviving, with only a mention here and there of his "queer" nature. As I said before, however, I think he was probably destined to face some sort of backlash from his family or community; a herd does not appreciate an individual. The convergence of his tensions with Dewey Dell and Jewel and his mother's death, though, resulted in a fate much more dramatic and tragic than if his mother had survived. I did read an essay, however, that hopefully postulated that his institutionalization would be a way of freeing him from his family; perhaps this is true. As Cash says, "But it is better so for him. This world is not his world; this life his…

Darl might have not considered whether burning the barn down was the best idea and what the consequences would be but he certainly thought through cremating his mother and giving her a better ending than what their family had already put her through. His thought process only seemed to get through to Cash at the time, ignorance from the rest of his family and their selfish desires to arrive in Jefferson was undoubtedly what clouded their visions. His extreme actions and descent into insanity can be blamed on his family’s disregard for one another and selfishness. His sister was too preoccupied with her pregnancy, Jewel with his horse, Vardaman, the youngest brother, with going into town for a train, Cash for a graphophone, and Anse for new teeth and ultimately, a new Mrs. Bundren. Darl desired for his family to focus on his mother and he believed that their apathy regarding her death was undeserved, so he acted in her best interest, or what he believed was in her best…

Wiesel is, therefore, interested in exploring this type of madness, the mystical rather than the clinical madness. As noted early in this paper, Wiesel describes the difference between the two: “A clinical madman isolates himself and others, while a mystical one wants to bring the Messiah” (Artist as Witness 189). Wiesel further argues that…

“Darl was mad from the first. He got progressively madder because he didn’t have the capacity not so much of sanity but of inertness to resist all the catastrophes that happened to the family. Jewel resisted because he was sane and he was the toughest. The others resisted through probably inertia, but Darl couldn’t resist it and and so he went completely off his rocker. But he was mad all the time.” (Gwynn et al., 110)…

Throughout the entire journey Darl does not wish to go to Jefferson or even care for his mother’s wish. The only thing he wanted was to stop this journey as it has already caused Cash’s to break his leg and become beyond repair. . Darl’s strong desire causes him to burn down the barn of Gillespie, a charitable neighbor. Inside this barn was Addie’s corpse. However, because of this foolish action Darl is taken away to Jackson on a train as Vardaman claims that Darl had “went crazy”(250). Even though Darl’s efforts were meant to be good he is sent to a mental institution for people thought he was mentally ill. Another reason is that his father did not want to stop his journey because Gillespie threatened to sue him for the burning of the farm.…

“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.” (Mark Twain) Both As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner and “Fall of the House of Usher” by Edgar Allen Poe can be considered gothic literature. Gothic literature is work that strives to get a reaction out of the audience such as fear, anxiety, and suspense. It is the darker side of literature. In As I Lay Dying and “Fall of the House of Usher”, the gothic conventions used are coffins, death, and torture.…

As the island grew closer, Elluel knew that something was wrong. Whether it was the sinking feeling in his stomach, or just seasickness, the elf did not know. A feeling at the base of his stomach was urging him to come here, by the will of Gaia herself. If the mother of earth had instructed him so, it must have been seriously grave indeed. It may have been considered foolish to approach the island with a small pathetic ship, but time was of the essence.…

An example of the theme of ‘inhuman cruelty and on page 65 it says “ Behind me, I heard the same man asking: “For God’s sake, where is God?” And from within me, I heard a voice answer: “Where He is? This is where--hanging here from this gallows…” That night, the soup tasted of corpses.” I included these quotes from the book to show that people were being hanged left and right and none of the prisoners had payed no mind to them every hanging was indifferent to them. Until the young pipel was hanged, this made the prisoners asks questions as to where God was during these times of cruelty, when they needed him the most. It also made them seek answers as to the boy dying slowly from being hung, as a prisoner says “ This is where-hanging here from this gallows. . .” showing that the prisoner believed that God was in front of him suffering.…
