TUTORIAL 7: NOTICES AND ADVERTISEMENTS
Task 1: Here is a very poorly written notice. Decide what is wrong with it and design a better one.
REWIRING OF BATEMAN HOTEL
Essential repairs will be carried out on 26 and 27 May from 9.30 to 11.30 and from 2.30 to 4.30. During these times all electricity will be cut off. Nothing will work. We apologize in advance and hope guest don’t find it too inconvenient.
Please note the followings: - Cleaning staff will not be able to clean rooms during these time - Lifts will not work - Refreshments will provided in lounge area if guests stay in hotel
NB: Fire alarms work on a different system so they will still work during cut off time.
Cleaners will try to clean rooms before 9.30 but if not possible they will continue later in the day.
Manager
Task 2: Identify the Elements of an Effective Notice to rewrite the following notice accordingly.
PHOTOCOPYING COSTS
Would all staff please carefully consider the use of the photocopier.
The cost of photocopying is rising every month and is becoming very expensive.
The photocopier should only be used when there are no cheaper methods available. The printing department can usually make copies that are cheaper than those from the photocopier.
Also, please make sure that you only make the number of copies needed so that waste is avoided.
Unless we can cut the cost of photocopying I will have to consider ways of introducing limits on the number of copies staff can make. Alternatively perhaps only senior staff will be allowed to use the machine.
I hope these measures will not be necessary and look and forward to receiving your co-operation in helping to reduce photocopying costs.
