How would people deal with having their dreams altered, and completely reformed? Having values that do not seem to concern others anymore? Many people grow up either doing what they planned their whole life for, or having others layout their future for them. The film 'Dead Poets Society' by Peter Wier uses characters and situations to express the idea of conformity, by ways in which an individual's values are challenged. A few characters in the film like Charlie and Neil experience how one's dreams and values can be altered to take different decisions because of their new environment, how attaining other's hopes can be a challenge to compete with. This can change how they think, and how newly they deal with their problems and situations knowing that they can change a part of their life. When individuals are faced with a problem, there are a quite few ways in which one can address the issue. There are options where one of them is talking about someone's problems with the people they have them with and find a common ground, or another way which it can be kept a hidden from that person in order to avoid the conflict. In this situation, Neil Perry chose the second option. This quote," For the first time in life, I know what I want to do", said by Neil Perry shows his realization of what he wants to do, knowing this for the first time in his life. Mr. Keating's advice of 'seizing the day' indicates a new idea for him compared to his other classes, no one has said to him that he should take hold of his opportunities because they might not come again in life. Neil makes up a letter of acceptance from his father to join a theatre play even though this decision is against his father's wishes. He knew his father would never accept so he approached his situation in a way where he has hid this secret from his father in order to join the play.
