My first point will be about freedom of expression. We have writers, journalists, film makers who all one thing in common they express their feelings through their novels, media and movies. So why shouldn’t artist be allowed to do the same? Anything someone publishes from their point of view has the potential to be controversial, so why should art be targeted as being the only type of media that is controversial?
Everyone should have the freedom to express their point of view in whatever form they choose. For e.g. in the age in the opinion section people write into paper about their views on a particular topic day in day out. Art is just another in which people express their ideas and feelings and though it may seem a little bit more confrontational compared to a book it has a lot of positive benefits, which I will be talking about a bit further in my speech. Freedom, is such a lucky thing that our country has to offer, so that’s why it should not be taken for granted and must be used appropriately. So if people want to produce so called ‘controversial art ‘ we should just accept it and move on.
Secondly, about how controversial art helps people come in contact with their own prejudices. Recently in the paper there was a cartoon ( art form) that depicted these indigenous people talking about the first white Australians coming and claiming ownership of their land. The indigenous people are talking about how they just came and stole our land, didn’t care to learn about our culture or language and just gave our children drugs. This cartoon’s main point of view is to get people thinking about their possible prejudices against refugees. It’s trying to put forward the idea that the White Australians were once boat people too so they shouldn’t
