How many Cinderella stories do you think there are? There is over 900 of them! But right now I’m only going to compare\contrast 3 stories called, “Ashenputtle”, “Yeh-Shen”, and “The Algonquin Cinderella”. Plus 1 poem, “Interview”. All of these stories, not the poem, are from long ago! Yet, the poem is a modern poem! Here is all of the compare/contrast I’m going to do.
The similarities in some of these stories except the poem are from long ago, they also have a Cinderella figure too! In the story “Ashenputtle” after her mom dies her father marries another woman with 2 daughters, and the treat Ashenputtle very terribly just like Yeh-Shen. In “Yeh-Shen” her father marries two
wives because of his religious traditions, so her step-mom treats her terribly because of her beauty. The same thing happens to the Cinderella in “The Algonquin Cinderella” because her real sisters were jealous of her beauty too! So they took her and chopped her hair and burned her face with hot ashes. So all of those stories have a stepfamily except for “The Algonquin Cinderella” and all but the poem have a magic element to the story. Such as the fish bones in “Yeh-Shen, or the magic tree in “Ashenputtle” and in “The Algonquin Cinderella” the special guy is invisible and her hair grew back because of their love for each other! Another similarity is in “Ashenputtle” and “Yeh-Shen” they both have a banquet/fair that they attend without the step-mom knowing. When they went to the fair they weren’t recognizable because they cleaned up and wore respectable outfits. Thise2 stories also had a golden shoe that helped them find their king or prince. While they go to the fair they needed help with the outfit, Yeh-Shen had magic fish bones while Ashenputtle has a magic tree by her mother’s grave. In the 3 stories they ended up marrying the special guy. The poem only ties in with having the step-mom in the story.
All of these stories have a different country region where they are from or originated. The story and poem “The Algonquin Cinderella” and “Interview” have no step-family while the other do. They also had no banquet/fair to attend either. “Interview” has no sort of magic at all like the others do. In the story and poem “Interview” and “The Algonquin Cinderella” they both have no shoe to help them in the story. “Interview” is modern, doesn’t have any other character but the step-mom. It also has very rude compliments added in there by the step-mom giving Cinderella a mean compliment.
Now the next time you read a fairytale you might want to compare it to another one. Or maybe just read and not compare/contrast then. Now comparing/contrasting Cinderella wasn’t easy but to do 900! Oh my gosh! Hopefully I did a good job comparing/contrasting them.
