"Vinayaka" is another name of Lord Ganesh, the God loved and worshiped by every Hindu. Lord Ganesh is the protector of his devotees. Eight effigies found among the nature, sculptured by nature have been housed in the temples created ages ago at the places where the effigies were first identified. These ‘Swayambhu’ effigies, now the sacred idols, are the famous "Ashta Vinayak."
Ashtavinayaka literally means “eight Ganeshas” in Sanskrit. Everybody should visit the Ashtavinayak in Maharashtra at least once in a life time. There are eight temples dedicated to Ganesha, in Maharashtra related to various episodes from the puranas and other legends. According to Shastra, first you have to visit Moreshwar of Moregaon. This AshtaVinayakaTemple is in the banks of Kukadi River which is in Junnar District and around 85 kms from Pune. The Deity of this shrine is known as Vigneshwara which means ‘remover of all obstacles’. It is believed that after visiting this place God takes away all your problems. As per the Legend a demon by name Vignasura was troubling the Sages. Responding to the prayers of the Sages Lord Ganesh fought with the Demon Vignasura who surrendered to Ganesha and agreed to stop his misdeeds. In connection with the surrender of Vignasura the Sages installed an image of Vigneshwara at Ozar on Ganesh Chaturti day and offered worship. SHREE MAHAGANAPATI TEMPLE, RANJANGOAN:
Shri Mahaganapati Temple of Ranjangoan is the eight and last GaneshTemple to be visited during the Ashta Vinayaka Temple Pilgrimage. According to the Legend it is said that it is at this place Lord Shiva invoked Ganesha before fighting the Demon Tripurasura.     Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, Ca. offers a whole level devoted to Asian Art, which is why I decided to go to this Museum. I chose the Bronze statue of Shiva as Nataraja or Lord of the Dance. We studied this in class, and I was taken with it then, and even more so in person. The statue is from India: Tamil Nadu, c. 1000. The statue is a form of Shiva, with four arms and a raised leg, standing over a dwarf, with different objects in his hands or forming meaningful hand gestures, and flowing hair. He is then surrounded by a slender circle of flames. Shiva is one of the principal gods of Hinduism. In this form as Lord of the Dance he displays both destructive and regenerative powers. The Statue has a third-eye (tri-locana) which symbolizes Shiva’s ability to see all and destroy ignorance with his gaze. Ganga, the goddess of the Ganges River is caught in Shiva’s hair before bringing the water of life to earth. Shiva is holding a double-sided drum signifying creation. Shiva is also holding flames. The fire of destruction and transformation represents Shiva’s role as the destroyer at the end of each world age. The cobra represents his mastery over death. Under Shiva’s standing leg is a dwarf. The dwarf is the demon of forgetfulness and Shiva is trampling him, indicating his ability to overcome ignorance. Shiva’s other foot is held up in the dancing motion to signify liberation.     No Indian art, painting, sculpture or architecture was created aimlessly or accidentally. Even the smallest piece of leaflet has its own spiritual content. Most of the time spiritual content was reached by showing sculptures in movement. The same could be said about sculptures of Indian Gods or Goddesses. Every God does something that has a deep cosmic symbolism. Especially, it can be said about Shiva Nataraja or God of Dance. The term Nataraja means the representation of Shiva during the performance of his “dance of furious bills”. Shiva Nataraja is depicted in a pose called “tribhanga”. Tribhanga is the dance that is commonly used in the traditional India culture and art. Comparing to the contrapposto pose, Tribhanga means break of a body in three parts; at the “neck, waist and knee” (Purana 2006). Shiva Nataraja is a large statue depicted out of bronze. His body is idealized without any fatness and no scars or marks are presented. The sculpture was done in a non-stop movement as his hands reaching towards the space. Shiva’s face is idealized and naturalized. It is smooth, handsome face without any blemishes or scars, and it is also natural because it resembles human face. Shiva’s nose is perfectly shaped and eyebrows are perfectly elliptical and symmetrical. The early traditions of Indian culture used a special position of hands called mudra. The two lower hands are posed in a mudra, with both arms reaching to Shiva’s right and both hands are cupped. Mudra would usually be used to carry religious symbolism. In this particular sculpture it is used to show Shiva’s numerous characteristics as a high deity. The objects in the right and left hands of Shiva Nataraja work together in carrying out the symbolism. Shiva holds a drum in his upper right hand. In his upper left hand, Shiva holds a fire. I would like to touch on one of the deities that are worshiped by Hindu people. The most common is Ganesha remover of obstacles and God of success; he is the son of Shiva and Parvati. He is one of the five prime Hindu deities worshiped in India. He is the most widely worshipped God in India, and also beyond, when a new home is built or a business is opened he is called upon to bless the act. Lord Ganesha rides a rat and has four hands which he holds a shell, a chakra, a mace, and a water-lily. He has a head of an elephant and a pot belly which is normal for both male and female deities in Hindu, which shows prosperity. Ganesha was born a normal boy; there are several versions of the story of why he has the head of an elephant. Ganesha’s mother, the goddess Parvati, created Ganesha while bathing by using the dirt from her body. Afterwards she instructed Ganesha to guard the entrance to her bathroom. When her husband, Shiva, came home, he saw a stranger blocking his access and became angry, so he cut off Ganesha’s head in a fit of rage. Parvati was struck with grief, and to console her, Shiva restored Ganesha to life, giving him an elephant head. Another story is Parvati brother Saturn was cursed but at her request he looked upon her newborn Son and by doing so reduced his head to ashes. Vishnu the God of love intervened and searched for another head and returned with an elephant head.
