through political or nonpolitical means. This could range from hosting events for everyone to be a part of, to actively voting or volunteering for events. We, as a community, should be trying to bring everyone together so that if someone ever needed the help or support, we could unite and help that person. An easy way to start up these civic engagements would be through social media. The world revolves around being social and social media. There are many people out there who use these outlets already and we should make use of these so that they are an advantage for us. Word on social media is easily spread and easily accessible so we should use it as often as we can so that we can be able to begin working on various civic and social projects. Helping your community and those in your community is great and we need everyone’s help and contributions if we want to make things better and easier for ourselves and our fellow community members.
Secondly, we should begin voting more when it comes to matters involving politics.
We have a large population living in America right now and we have a number of asian political leaders or government workers. Even though we have these though, the whole percentage of Asian Americans that actually do vote is estimated to be less than 1%. This is very low and so, we are considered to be the least politically engaged racial group out of all other races. And since our percentage of people voting is so low, we are usually not targeted when it comes time to vote. However, if we could get more people to vote, and if we want things to change, we need to vote for it when the time comes. We, as a whole, only comprise about 5% of the amount of people who are eligible of voting, but we are a fast growing population and in a couple of years, we could become one of the largest voting groups. That being said, if we do grow to be that large, our votes could sway the entire voting process and we could be able to vote for everything we want changed and come out victorious. We could make things better for ourselves through voting but that process can only take place if we begin it
now.
In conclusion, the Asian Pacific Islander American community should be participating more when it comes to voting or civic events. Doing more civic events will help bring the community together and make everyone’s lives better whereas voting will help us to be able to decide legally what things we want changed. Ghandi once said, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” It is like Ghandi says, if we want things to change, we have to be the ones striving and making our way towards that change.
