3.MINERALS AND POWER RESOURCES
A naturally occurring substance having a definite chemical composition is called a mineral.Minerals are found in certain areas only and not every where.
Minerals are formed in different conditions and human activities do not play any role in their formation.
Instead only natural processes are involved .
Minerals are identified on the basis of their physical properties like colour ,density ,hardness and chemical properties like solubility.
On the basis of composition ,we classify minerals as metallic and non metallic.
Ferrous minerals and non ferrous minerals are a classification of metallic minerals .ferrous minerals contain iron.
Minerals occur in different types of rocks.some are found in igneous rocks, some in metamorphic rocks while others occur in sedimentary rocks.
Metallic minerals are found in igneous and metamorphic rock formations that form large plateaus.(metals—i-m)
Example:iron ore –in north Sweden , copper and nickel depostits in Ontario,Canada
Iron ,nickel ,chromites and platinum in s.africa are examples of minerals found in igne and meta rocks.
Sedimentary rock formations of plains and young fold mountains contain non-metalic minerals like limestone.(nm-sedi)
Power means energy .we require power for every thing .
Power resources are to two types :conventional and non conventional.
Conventional power sources are those that have been in use for a long time .fossil fuels and firewood are examples.
Fire wood is widely used in india for cooking and heating .
1

Fossil fuels are what the remains has the remains of plants and animals converted in to after they remained buried under the earth million of years .
Coal petroleum and natural gas are important fossil fuels .
Electricity from coal is called thermal power.Petroleum and its derivatives are called black gold because of their importance.
Natural gas is found with petroleum deposits
Hydel power is

The material on the right, the gneiss – looks quite different to the peridotite. That would suggest that we may have different minerals – and different minerals mean different environment and or/different processes. The gneiss is a metamorphosed rock – so a rock that has been transformed from its original form due to heat and or pressure. Gneiss makes up most of earths lower crust – the pressure and heat transforms sedimentary and igneous rocks.…

alternative energy source. It is what we know of as standard solar energy where there is a collector that captures that sunlight to heat the air and water and can also generate electricity. Another form of alternative energy is wind energy. An advantage to using alternative energy sources is that they are renewable. A disadvantage of alternative energy sources is that they can be inconsistent, as is the case especially with wind energy. Discuss how they work, how they compare with fossil fuels, and their relative advantages and disadvantages. A major advantage of fossil fuels is their…

Most rock forming minerals are silicates because of the abundance of the two elements oxygen and silicon in the crust and mantle, which make up about 90% of the earth’s crust. Not all nonsilicate minerals groups make sense chemically, for instance a nonsilicate would be granite, which is made up of partly quartz, which is in fact a silicate. The non-silicate mineral groups collectively…
