There is so much more in the book than this simple summary can reveal. After reading the book, I think the author’s thesis is spelled out nicely when looking at the chapter…
I think she was trying to get across that African Americans were still being treated unfairly when the moved up north rather than being down south. In the relief station the desk…
Then the book goes through the long and racist history of Virginia. Immigrants were moving in not realizing the struggles blacks had to face to raise the community to modern standards. Religious conflicts were ramped. Chapter 7 goes back to Esam Omeish being raised as a good muslim in Libya, but in…
The novel tells us, of the endurance that women must possess in order to survive, but also the love and sacrificial relationship that Laila and Mariam develop together. The novel depicts the destruction of Afghanistan in terms of culture and…

Throughout all the chapters within five through ten one stood out the most to me and this chapter was chapter eight. Within this chapter is a lot of information but I felt like chapter eight had the most meaning because there is a document set within that has so many different voices on different aspects of life and culture within the new republic. From women rights to education and even the average farmers thoughts on this new republic. Within Chapter eight P3-5 was a woman's perspective on backcountry America.…

3.I like the main characters of my novel because all the main characters are the ones who went to the Carving (Mountains) to escape the society and find the rebellion group.I also like how Cassia and Ky take the risk of going out to the Carving knowing that they might be dead or their safe somewhere I can find each other at.They would be my friends because they are very adventurous and they take risks and don't leave their friends behind. When Cassia thinks about leaving the camp she makes up her mind quick because she wants to find Ky but if she thinks long about it she might want to go back to the society.’’If I'm going to run to find Ky,it has to be soon’’, Says Cassia as she thinks about leaving the camp. ‘’Am I going to run? I've thought…
Another aspect that has really stood out to me, were the characters Firoozeh presents. I understand that these are actual people, Firoozeh’s family in fact, but I am still so amazed by the depth and pulchritudinousness these characters are written in. The fstories about Firoozeh’s father are especially well written and really present his personality well. However, (in my opinion) Firoozeh mother was not described/written well. She seems a very bland character, who is only mentioned for silly things and chores so far, which is fine, but I really hopes the author would elaborate on this important character later in the book, but I never came to see her with the depth that other characters had.…
I picked the theme of self-reliance. As I read the story it was unbelievable to me that she did not give up, even though there were many times when she could have. What she thought was a good idea in the beginning, being just a teenager, she had no idea what the impact she would make on herself and the future Africain American people in.…

them that even though she came from the ghettos anyone can get out if they want to and…
The author was very successful in proving her point about the racism going on in the world. She first proved a point by telling her story because she is admitting that racism is something, and how she knows that it is. Her purpose was to inform people that racism is something and if someone that is young with a very racist family can overlook those things her family did, then she knows that people now can start to overlook t what happened in the…
After the third chapter my partner was asking some very well thought questions. Her questions helped me understand the book more in depth. Secondly, I found some very didactic words in the book. For example, I found the word serfdom which means the state of being a feudal laborer.…
