INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
In the most developed countries, or even on those that are considered to be developing economies, construction has always been a major contributor in the social and economical growth. In countries such as the United States, the construction industry has contributed a rating of 4.5%in GDP and to Germany and Japan, a total of 6.7% and 17% ,respectively.
However, beyond these seemingly good numbers is the fact that the construction industry is as well, one of the biggest contributor in the national workplace average that is concerning on workplace accidents, injuries and fatalities. In this industry it is 50% more likely to acquire injury during the course of the project, as compared to other sectors .
Difficult workplace condition, behaviour of the people involved, poor implication of procedures and guidelines in the workplace, and minimal check-ups of authorities are just some of the reasons why accidents occur in any construction site.
Due to facts that accidents rates in construction are high when compared to other industries, the construction and the project managers need to be fully prepared to deal with accidents when they occur, undertaking proper investigations and reporting procedures afterwards. Accident statistics represent not only terrible human tragedies but also substantial economic costs. This is because accidents cause damage to plant equipment and the loss of productive work time until the normal site working rhythm and morale restored.
