Impact of Hydration on Physical and Mental Performance By Raeey Melaku.

Introduction Our body has its own way of indicating when we need a certain aspect that is essential for us to live. For food, there is hunger. For urination, there's the need to use the bathroom and in this case, for water, there is thirst. Water is by far the most essential nutrient in the world. We need water everyday. We can go up to three weeks without food and yet we can only survive three days without water/fluid. In this essay, we shall be looking at how varying levels of hydration/fluids can affect the biological impairment of an athlete or student, such as cognitive aspects, motor function, abilities to do tasks and many more.

Hydration is needed so our body does not become dehydrated which means a lack of bodily fluids which would lead to a series of symptoms including but not limited to; extreme thirst, less frequent urination, dark coloured urine, fatigue, dizziness and confusion. Hydration is our body's way of maintaining a variety of bodily functions such as, and not limited to, carrying nutrients and oxygen to the rest of the body, converting food to energy, protecting and cushioning vital organs and many more. You may ask how hydration can vary and according to the British Nutrition Foundation, it can vary by age, time of year, climatic conditions, diet and levels of physical activity. Excessive levels of physical activity can cause you to sweat much more, in turn leading to dehydration. Climatic conditions such as a very hot heatstroke also induce the same effects as physical activity in terms of sweat and age can be a result of weakened kidneys such as kidneys that are affected by diabetes insipidus. Weakened kidneys cannot retain fluids and most commonly water for long, therefore leading to dehydration no matter how …show more content…
Nevertheless, dehydration has dire effects on someone's physical capabilities, ranging from excessive thirst to extreme fatigue. For students, dehydration is a major problem as they do need their full mental capacity to focus on their education, but dehydration serves as a huge problem as it causes the following symptoms that may affect school-life: fatigue, dizziness and confusion. Being confused, dizzy and tired in a classroom can serve detrimental problems to the student and their fullest ability to act their best in a classroom. On the other hand, athletes have to have their full physical capabilities on, since they do much physical work such as running, working out and many more but due to the dizziness, fatigue and confusion, not only would it be hard to continue on with the usual amount of work they do, but on top of the dehydration it may cause even worse effects that could be irreparable to ones life such as weak pulses, seizures and a low level of consciousness so if one does have these symptoms it is of utmost urgency that they get sent to the hospital for treatment. nearest hospital immediately, if
