Assess the view that process of globalisation has led to changes in both the amount of and types of crime.
Globalisation is the growing interdependence of societies across the world, with the spread of the same culture, goods and economic interests across the globe. Therefore what happens in one locality is shaoed by distant events. Globalisation has many causes including the spread of new information and communication and also the global mass media, cheap air travel influence. Held et al suggested there has been a globalisation of crime. The same process that has brought about globalisation of legitimate activities has also brought about organised crime. Globalisation creates new opportunities for crime, new means of committing and new offences. Castells argues there is now a global criminal economy worth over a trillion pounds per annum. These take a number of forms such as arms/ sex trafficking, smuggling of illegal immigrants, cyber crimes, terrorism and money laundering. This global criminal economy has two sides, demand and supply. The large of transnational organised crime is the demand for its products and services in the west. However, this economy will always need a supply side. This is linked to the process of globalisation eg third world drug producing countries like Peru and Afghanistan. Globalisation creates new insecurities and produces a new mentality of risk consciousness in which risk is seen as global. Eg increased movement of migrants has raised anxieties among populations in the western countries about the risks of crime and how to protect their boundaries. These risks are increased further by the media which gives an exaggerated view of dangers we face. The media creates moral panics which can cause inequality among ethnic minorities or working class boys.
