Mental Health
Causes and Prevalence Mental illness is the third greatest issue in Australia, with the leading mental health issue being depression. Mental health is more prevalent than people may think, mainly due to the fact that most people are not as aware as they could be, and may not even realise a co-worker has a mental health issue such as depression or anxiety. Approximately 1 in 5 Australian adults experience a mental health issue in any given year, and 45% will experience an issue in their lifetime. Mental health issues have a wide range of causes, however most of the time the cause is unsure. Factors that can contribute to poor mental health include:
Unhealthy work environment
Childhood abuse, violence or neglect
Social isolation, loneliness or discrimination
The death of someone close
Stress
Homelessness or poor housing arrangement
Poverty or debt
Unemployment
Caring for other people who are ill eg. Family member or friend
Long term physical health issues
Significant trauma eg. Military combat, involved in a serious accident
Physical causes including head injury, conditions such as epilepsy
Genetics
Employee assistance programs (EAP’s) can be introduced in the workplace in order to reduce the impact of mental illness on the individual, the employees surrounding them and the productivity of the company. The most appropriate program that can be used to do this is a work-based counselling program made available to managers, employees and their families for use when they need help and support.
Overview
The suggested counselling program would be made available to all employees and their families. It would involve having both internal and external support options, allowing the employee to decide whether they would like assistance from an internal service or an external service. The counselling program would be expected to minimise the occurrence and effects of mental health issues in the workplace. In
