When this has all been achieved the learners will need to be given information about the planned assessment. First of all they will need to have an understanding of what they are about to study, explaining what they need to do to meet the criteria set by OFQUAL – the governing body of the qualifications. They will need to understand what is expected of them when attending the course by giving them the code of conduct for them to follow. Growing up as the oldest sister to a mentally challenged sibling with multiple learning disabilities and having a mother who is a Special Education Teacher to autistic and behavioral challenged children, I have been surrounded by the train wreck called the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). While the NCLB is supposed to hold our schools accountable and to offer assistance to struggling students who are unable to pass the standardize testing. What happens to the students who have learning disabilities? What happens to our vocational students (Home economics, welding,…

Assessment is used so that I can check that learning has taken place and to what extent. I use assessment at all stages of the learning process in line with organizational requirements; firstly by conducting an initial assessment with the learner. This shows me the level at which the work to be completed needs to be set and gives the learner a starting point. A diagnostic assessment is completed by the learner so that I can identify areas of weakness or for improvement, for example spelling or grammar. Additional information, such as learning styles can be understood through interview and questionnaire. I teach on a one-to-one basis therefore when the learner completes set pieces of work, I am able to formatively assess by using various methods. Such methods consist of written work, question and answer, observation, presentation of group work, practical activities or a demonstration. I also write feedback on ‘Post-It’ notes to praise a piece of work that is completed correctly and, if there are any criticisms, these are written positively so as not to discourage the learner and to help them achieve better results in the future. I use summative assessment at the end of the course by checking that all evidence of the learners work meets the criteria of the qualification. The learner makes drafts of work for each task and then a final text, often using current events for inspiration; they do this for different audiences and purposes so that the standard of work is of good quality and there is sufficient evidence for their portfolio.…

It is easy to become so immersed in the job of coaching that we lose sight of the exact purpose of a particular element of assessment. There is then the possibility that we are not achieving that purpose, or that we overlook another form of assessment which might be more appropriate. We actually assess students for quite a range of different reasons – motivation, creating learning opportunities, to give feedback (both to students and staff), to grade, and as a quality assurance mechanism (both for internal and external systems). Because all too often we do not disentangle these functions of assessment, without having really thought it through, assessments are frequently trying to do…

There are many assessing methods, which are used to assess student’s skill, knowledge, understanding and ability. As Gray states ‘assessment is a process by which evidence of student achievement is obtained and judged.’ Gray et al. 2005:50 The assessment will identify not only the knowledge, but also areas for improvement and development. Possibly can identify that additional support will be required and appropriateness of the course for the student. Assessments also motivate and encourage the students.…
