Lipids & ATP
• Fatty acids are important to energy production.
They generate
ATP.
• This is completed by:
1. Starting with a triglyceride molecule the fatty acid part separates from the glycerol part of the molecule.
2. Once separated, the fatty acid chain will break into sections.
Each section will be composed of 2 carbon molecules.
3. Each of the carbon pieces will form Acetyl CoA. Each Acetyl
CoA enters the Krebs Cycle.
4. It is during the Krebs Cycle that each Acetyl CoA produces 12
ATP

Saturated Fatty Acid
• Lipids that are solid at room temperature
• A diet high in saturated fats can lead to build up in the form

Building blocks- Fatty acids are the building blocks for the
cell membrane parts: phospholipids & glycolipids
2. Targeting molecules- Many proteins are attached to fatty acids. This leads to proteins being directed to their appropriate places in membranes.
3. Fuel molecules- Fatty acids are stored as triacylglycerols.
Triacylglycerols are also called triglycerides or neutral fats.
4. Messenger molecules- Products of fatty acids function as hormones and as intracellular messenger molecule

Diets Lacking Fat
• Each myelin nerve fiber in the brain is insulated by fat.

Fat cushion many organs in our body. Not having enough fat to cushion these organs will make them more susceptible to injuries.
Our bodies need energy to keep running. Fats provide this energy. 9 calories of energy are provided by each gram of fat.
Fat-soluble vitamins are: A,D,E, and K. You can become deficient in these necessary vitamins if your diet is too low in fat.
