Summary and Response At first, the topic of the essay which I want to talk about is “A Global Analysis of Culture”. It is written by Alex Thio who is a professor of sociology at Ohio University. The essay mainly talks about the global analysis of culture and he shows us the different of global culture in four aspects: “Cultural Universals, Culture Clash, Ethnocentrism and Cultural Relativism”. (A Global Analysis of Culture, Alex Thio) Because I am interested in cultural diversity, then I choose the article to finish my essay. After reading the whole article, the main idea of the article is the effects of different culture on human beings. The writer analyses it in four points: “Cultural Universals, Culture Clash, Ethnocentrism and Cultural Relativism”. (A Global Analysis of Culture, Alex Thio) First, in Cultural Universals, the writer thinks that cultures are the stuff which people everywhere meet these needs. These needs are universal, like food and shelter. So cultures are universal. Second, in Culture Clash, the writer’s opinion is that different people in different area have different faith. Those different faiths cause culture clash and he mainly talks about this in four points. Third, in Ethnocentrism, he said that as we are born, we are taught that our way of life is the greatest. By these measures, people tend to feel a strong sense of unity as a nation and keep their ethnocentrism to themselves. Both Culture Clash and Ethnocentrism “may create more conflict and violence in the world”. (A Global Analysis of Culture, Alex Thio) Fourth, in Cultural Relativism, the writer thinks cultural relativism help people to understand the cultures of others. And it is contribute to international peace. In my opinion, I agree the analysis of global culture. According to my own culture, in Culture Clash, the most obvious way is KFC and McDonald.
