However, in arranging for transportation, we need to contact county services or city rides to provide transportation service three times per week. This also increases Rapha’s value to the community.…

Gawande explains that many assisted living facilities will promise a better way. He asserts that as we age, we tend to “narrow in” and prefer to spend time with people we know and love rather than expanding our social networks. There are two reasons he provides as to why assisted living facilities typically cannot fulfil the desire for connection. First, we must recognize that assisted living facilities are a service business and Dr. Gawande points out that there are no good metrics for evaluating how well they truly assist someone with living. Second, because the elderly usually make this decision because of their children’s insistence, the facilities cater more to the sense of protectiveness that children feel toward their parents. As one gerontologist mentioned to Dr. Gawande, “We want autonomy for ourselves and safety for those we…

late. In order to aid nursing home residents in an effective manner, one must not only integrate preferences and options, but also refine nursing home environments (Choi et al., 2008, p. 545). The changes in the nursing home facilities may range from no longer including structured activities to making residents feel at home. In addition, adding complex tasks to residents daily life may help with feelings of unworthiness. According to Bhar & Brown (2012) reestablishing problem solving in nursing home residents produces feelings of worthiness, proficiency and significance (p. 121). Restoring problem solving in residents may be a key to preventing suicide. However, further research is necessary to effectively aid nursing home residents. Further…

Nursing homes, however, are designed for persons in need of 24-hour nursing care (Allen, 2011) Even though they provide almost the same residential components of other long-term care options, which includes housing, personal care, protection, supervision, and sometimes therapy, the availability of on-site medical staff is the edge they have over the others. Nursing homes have custodial care, which a person with Alzheimer’s disease will need. The custodial care which includes assistance with all of the activities of daily living like eating, dressing, bathing, walking and medication management. With the above explanation, Don will likely choose a nursing home for the care of his wife, Mary.…

To be honest, lack of education or knowledge about dementia is one of the greatest challenges that the health care system faces. It would be hard to provide the best care for the people with the disease. Not only does it affect the caregivers' performance, but it would raise an ethical issue. From the article, "Care for Residents with Dementia in an Assisted Living Facility," although there were no reports of clients being abused, this is an issue that all caregivers should be aware of (Sharpp, T. J., Kayser-Jones, J. S., & Young, H. M., 2012). Providing care to the clients with the disease can put a lot of stress on the caregivers; therefore, it's important to understand the policy and follow it. Perhaps enforcing the caregivers…

Communal living that provides planned activities, housekeeping and laundry, transportation, exercise, meals, and wellness programs is assisted living. These facilities assist with activities of daily living: such as bathing, eating, dressing, and medical reminders. The Emeritus Corporation provides trained nursing assistants that help the elderly with aided care. In this corporation they also provide a memory care wing for the residents suffering dementia or Alzheimer’s. This unit requires their staff to go through “General Orientation” and have an eight-hour class that’s the Join Their Journey Program, teaching them how to approach and speak to the residents. “Assisted living was created to offer seniors who could no longer live on their own in a more home-like environment than nursing homes. And since most facilities offered little or no medical care, they were loosely regulated,” said A.C. Thompson. The main concern to people involved with assisted living, are the facilities well regulated and do they meet the needs of the residents?…

What would have made a difference is if I got the change of working with individuals at the RCFE to see what they liked, what they would like to change, what they find negative, what they desire, I would have like to have the change to visit a RCFE that had already been up and running to see what it was all about and find ways to improve. I feel that there are always ways to improve something in some kind of way whether it is something big or small. Having the change of interacting with those who stay in a RCFE will have allowed me to get a better point of view of what to expect and what to do for grabbing someone’s attention when there is another RCFE near by. Where there is competition it is important to do something different so that others get attracted and another thing is to introduce our facility to other facilities.…
