Crate & Barrel: While researching companies that ship their products and merchandise overseas, I came across Crate & Barrel which was the most interesting. Crate & Barrel is located right here in Cleveland, Ohio along with other in store locations across the United States. Crate & Barrel is a store that sells everything from furniture and small kitchen appliances to decorations for the holidays. Mr. Pope at Crate & Barrel was most helpful in explaining the procedures of shipping internationally and also the good and bad when shipping overseas. Almost all the orders that are to be delivered overseas are placed online at their website, http://www.crateandbarrel.com but they do receive orders in the store for overseas shipping also. Crate & Barrel According to Mr. Pope, “the most important aspect of shipping overseas is to make sure the product arrives on time and intact”. Shipping overseas has become very popular amongst department and furniture stores. Even though shipping is costly for the customer, most consumers find that it’s worth paying the extra money for their loved ones to receive quality products on time. One of the positive things about ordering online for shipping overseas according to Mr. Pope is the currency exchange rate is automatically done. All you need to do is choose the country you are shipping to and the rate is changed automatically. You can choose to shop using their country’s currency or the U.S. While speaking to Mr. Pope he mentioned that the feedback regarding shipping overseas has been for the most part positive. There are times, especially in today’s world when shipping overseas can be delayed due to terrorist risks and so forth. Merchandise are being more scrutinized now a days because of the security threats. There are a lot of times when a person wants to purchase and ship something over to someone in Afghanistan and sometimes that can take weeks due to security. But in

There are many external factors that affect the international operations and UPS. International shipping is a huge every growing industry, with UPS leading the pack for shipments delivered and exchanged internationally. The demand for international shipping has increased dramatically over the years, and with this increase it calls for an increase in service which in return places much more pressure for performance on UPS as an industry. Working in international shipping myself I have learned that many things can affect the shipping process, especially when the shipment is international. One major factor that affects any shipment is the price of fuel. Fuel prices fluctuate constantly, so depending on the fuel price can determine rather a shipment is delivered and paid for appropriately.…

Crate & Barrel is a company that focuses on designing store displays that represents the function of the product being sold. The pride themselves in the fact that their displays were difficult to copy. The items they sold came from small, out-of-the way manufacturers the made beautiful and affordable products. Crate & Barrel’s strategy consisted of purchasing from a small group of factories in Europe initially. They would display their findings on the rugged crates and barrels they were shipped in. There displays have evolved over time and they have also expanded their sourcing strategy to include products from various countries. The store has also expanded nationally from a single store to nearly 150 U.S. locations and a store in Toronto. The store continues to stick with what they know in regards to a common style: contemporary, innovative, and functional designs featured in the season’s latest colors.…

As a teacher it is important to understand the theories of how and why people learn so that the individual needs of the learner are addressed. Jean Piaget was primarily interested in how knowledge developed in human organisms. Cognitive structuring of the knowledge was fundamental in his theory. According to his theory, cognitive structures are patterns of physical or mental action that underlie specific acts of intelligence and correspond to stages of child development. He has integrated both behavior and cognitive aspects in one developmental theory. In his theory he put forward four primary developmental stages. They are sensorimotor, preoperations, concrete operations, and formal operations. In the sensorimotor stage (0-2 years), intelligence takes the form of motor actions. Intelligence in the preoperation period (3-7 years) is intuitive in nature. The cognitive structure during the concrete operational stage (8-11 years) is logical but depends upon concrete referents. In the final stage of formal operations (12-15 years), thinking involves abstractions. (Cameron, 2002)…

Learning theories have been influential since the 20th century and are now used as diagnostic tools to help identify styles in which learners learn, (Avis et al. 2010). The summary behind these concepts, propose that all people learn differently, and to ensure individual learning needs teachers need to recognize these styles to address differentiation and learning needs of individual within group of learners, (Jarvis, 2006). The key learning theories from research are; behaviourism, cognitivism and humanist. Key academics Pavlov, Skinner and Watson (1973) influence the theory behind behaviourism. They approach behaviourism as a scientific approach towards a desired goal, consisting of reinforcement to shape behaviour. In thus the teachers act as a stimulant; shaping behaviour via repetition and habit forming to create a response. However influential theorists Bruner (1966), Piaget (1926) and Gagne (1985), argue that this style is manipulative, the learner will know how that learning process takes place but not necessarily know why? Behaviourist looked at the environment stimuli influencing response, whereas cognitivists look at the individual’s mental process in learning and how they gain that knowledge. Bruner (1966) believes people learn with the acquisition of knowledge as social process of problem solving. The focus stems to establishing positive conditions that promote the individuals path of being ‘ready to learn’, establishing a ‘meaning to learning’; with initiative and analytical thinking and finally with relevance of self- fulfilment of what ‘motivates the learner’. This takes away the behaviourist approach of learning without an external reward to learning with independent meaning in which you create your own path. Lastly Humanist approach to learning develops the idea of the learners at the centre of the learning process, (Maslow, 1970 and Rodgers et al, 1983). Rogers (1983) influenced this approach and believed that each learner is free to direct…
