Greece gave us many things Olympic theater, advancements in science, art, great works of literature, amazing architecture, mathematics, and our first democratic government.…
In ancient Greece era (ca 800-323 BCE), Greece was consisted of hundred of city states called “Poleis”. Each polis was an independent small country and many were only like a small town or a small village. A polis sometimes controlled very small territories. However, among all of the “Polies” in Greece, there were two poweful city states named Athens and Sparta. These two city states were powerful and influential among other Greek city states or poleis1.…
It is hard to say whether federalism would have saved the Greeks. On one hand, a combined Greek force would have had a much better chance against Phillip and the Macedonian force. On the other hand, Phillip made some very significant changes in the way the Macedonian army fought that it would have very difficult for even a united Greek force to compete with them. Even if the Greeks had been divided, the aftermath of the Peloponnesian War left many of the Greek states, especially Athens, with depleted resources, meaning they weren’t quite prepared to finance another war right then. One of the biggest reasons that federalism wouldn’t have saved the Greeks is that fact that Phillip made some drastic changes to the Macedonian military.…
While imperialism can bring social and economic growth it can also be taken too far leading to a power struggle. Smaller countries can be taken advantage of. Thus, others needing a justification for their actions. Countries can feel dominated by the power of others and end up giving up their sense of culture, customs, and even their identity. The basic justification for all countries was that it would provide a better and more productive way of life.…
Empires would be very different without the influence of our Spartan society. Athens and Sparta are both powerful city-states, although Athens abused their power with the use of slavery. Slavery is widely believed to be practiced in Sparta, but this is completely false. Sparta only implemented helots, who are treated more fairly than most people in the world, especially Athenian non-citizens.…
Throughout the past and present, human beings have had a natural tendency to believe they are better than average. The people of Athens were certainly no exception. They wanted to believe that they were the best humanity had to offer. The Athenians valued freedom and for every man to fulfill his own life and desires in peace. They claimed their sense of independence was balanced out through the fact that everyone upheld fair and just laws. They prided themselves on not sacrificing their individual identities (as the Spartans did) for the sake of military discipline and superiority. They ultimately held themselves as the pinnacle of versatility, a city full of people who were jack-of-all-trades. But the reality fell quite short of the perception.…
Athenians, we were not healthy. We made war and conquered cities to satisfy a lust for material possessions that exceeded the bounds of healthy need. We needed more of every sort of thing, and to satisfy this need we took money from other Greeks and then took their soldiers to protect us. As our lust grew even larger and our pride became ridiculous, we set out to conquer Sicily, a decision that led to our recent defeat at the hands of the Spartans. Our empire was thus the symptom of a disease, and if we allow that disease to rack our city once more, we will surely meet a fate similar to the one we have just witnessed unfold. People of Athens, if empire is your aim, hold yourselves back and do not rebuild the walls. What use will they be to us if they encourage the foul behavior we were engaged in during the past? If, on the other hand, it is the case that we will be entirely vulnerable without walls, that we find enemies ready to attack from every side, then perhaps consider building new walls. But if these walls will enflame our pride and inspire us to take up conquest once more, then we should avoid rebuilding…
Before I get into my case, I would like to present some background in formation on the Athenian Empire, who were originally known as the “Delian League”. They were the first democratic republic of the Greek world. They were feared as a country, for they were fierce and powerful, with a vicious militia. They…
American Imperialism is beneficial because it improves the United States economy. This is evident in Document 4, which states, “Banks make loans to colonies…
A few things I feel Athens should of done to ether last longer or win the war would be manipulate and cause rebellions. Sparta constantly feared leaving their home land unguarded. They always fear the slaves on the plantations would rise up like they did in the past. The fear was well placed due to the size of the slave population and the fact their food came from slaves. Now why couldn't Athens use these slaves to their advantage? All they needed to do was send a spy to the slaves, convince them to rise up, start a rebellion to stop the flow of food to Sparta and many other things. If they did that then Athens would of increased there numbers. Maybe give the slaves some armor and weapons to kill off a few Spartans, then jump in and flank them…
Being an educated european citizen, I feel that I should express my support for Imperialism. Since China was overflowing with unexploited natural resources and the government wasn't very strong in the first place, this made it easy for neighboring colonies and imperialists to take control. Though this may seem frightening for the citizens of China, they have yet to see the great things to come. China in turn will become a more cultured enviornment and it's growth will be astonishing! This won't only benefit China, but the country that gains control as well. Thats more land and more opprotunities for industrial growth. Hello! More jobs and a wealthier economy! I think Imperialism is a wonderful thing because it's a win-win…
It also allowed the European countries to gather raw materials to make new goods and technology. With the access to more free resources the europeans could make more of the things that they loved. They also were able to cure the small illnesses like the common cold. Countries were brought together and war was minimized by all the african countries that were controlled by the same mother country speaking the same language. many things happened during the age of imperialism, many things were bad, and yet many things were good. There were technological advancements, better health care, and access to great raw materials. That’s why the age of imperialism was a great time in…
The bad things of imperialism included that there main nation often imposed heavy taxes on colonies. Colonies also didn't have that much representation in the government's because they imposed rule on them. Even if the populations from the main countries had democratic representation. It had…
Imperialism is the policy of extending a country’s power and influence through diplomacy or military force. This policy was practiced by the Western Europeans throughout the 18th and 19th century. When they were colonizing what they classified as weaker nations, the colonizer and the colonized viewed the experience of imperialism in very different ways. The conquered nations of Africa, India, Middle East, and Indochina experienced the takeover by the Europeans but the effect of this was on the negative side. Based on the colonized countries, the Age of Imperialism did not improve the human condition.…
Among other things, imperialism implies armed conflicts and resource diversion, which are, in essence, extremely costly. One example of how imperialistic war can be detrimental to all involved is how this type of war destroys lives and communities, including the lives of innocent civilians. Imperialism also leads to the dissolution of borders, which leads to immigration, which can lead to the spread of disease the receiving territory is unprepared to contract. Imperialistic behavior also leads to more expedient globalization and the abuse of less organized territories for both outsourcing, and the evasion of legislation. Under most circumstances war can be economically beneficial to countries that act as military suppliers, however in imperialistic war; allies are generally manipulated by the dominating entity in such a fashion as to reap as much benefit as possible and deprive the supplying ally of any economic…
