Athletes-Students?
My topic for this research paper is “Should College athletes get paid for playing a sport?” My implied audience for this topic would be athletes, coaches, athletic directors, and NCAA coordinators. I will inform them why college athletes should get paid for what they do day in and day out. Also, I will show how playing a sport is the equivalent to a full time job and since athletes usually do not have enough free time to get a job than they should receive some spending money. As stated by Robert McCormick, "There are more demands put on these young men than any employee of the University” (Cooper 10).
The questions that will arise from this topic would be “How much money should they get paid?”, “Should some athletes get more than others depending on how good they are?”, “Isn’t receiving a scholarship basically like getting paid?” Not only should they receive money from their school they should be able to use their talents and publicity to make money as well. If they are so good at what they do and have worked their whole lives for it then why should they not be able to benefit from it? I am a direct stakeholder in this topic because I am a college athlete myself. When you play a sport in college, it is basically a full time job. You have to balance your school work with practices and competitions. Hopefully soon I can show some people why athletes should be paid for competing at the collegiate level.
Section 2:
The question as to if college athletes should get paid or not has been around for a while but I do not think the NCAA has come to the correct conclusion. Currently, under their rules, college athletes are not allowed to receive any monetary benefits from being a collegiate athlete because you are only an amateur. In being a college athlete myself, I know how much time and work you have to put into your sport with practices, competitions, and mandatory study hall, it is basically like a job. If I could have time for a job it would give me a lot of extra

In the article “7 Common Sense Reasons Why College Athletes Should Be Paid,” the author, Maurice Peebles conducts an interview with Jay Bilas to get his input on whether college athletes should be paid. He shares how the NCAA is a multi-billon dollar business that limits athletes in particular on earning money. Also, he gives examples of different perspectives that people can relate to in different industries of how this situation would apply to them. Furthermore, he explains that college athletes would benefit more from being paid and it would require them to get a better education by not allowing them to leave college early to go onto the professional stage. The school’s are benefitting much more than the players are because the players are the reason why all of this money is coming in, the schools are just being represented and then paid. The scholarships given do not equal to what some college athletes are worth, because some out there could easily…

In conclusion, college athletes should be paid. As previously stated in the words of NCAA President Mark Emmert, “I think not paying athletes is tradition and also there would be less fans at games if they were paid.” Paying athletes would not cause fewer fan to attend games. They need money to get them started just in case they don’t make it to the professional level of their sport, which most don’t. In conclusion I believe College athletes should get paid for their risk of playing the game they…

The notion of paying college athletes has been an ongoing and controversial debate for student-athletes, coaches, schools, media and most certainly the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Many would argue that playing major college sports is more like a job versus an extracurricular activity. As with the majority of many student athletes, some attend college with the aspiration of becoming professional players thereby college is seen as a means to end. Although student-athletes already receive compensation via full and partial scholarships to participate at the college level, passionate conversations will continue to be a topic of debate because of the enormous revenue generated by college sports.…

In recent years, colleges throughout the nation have come across plenty of controversy concerning the idea of whether or not athletes should be paid to play sports in college. To this day the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) deems this a violation of their rules, and that is no matter what the amateur status of the players who make college athletics a billion-dollar business is not going to change (“Associated Press”, 2013). Even though the issue is constantly being debated and to some the answer remains "up in the air" still to this day (Dabad, n.d.), I think the answer is quite simple on why college athletes shouldn’t be paid.…

There have been ongoing arguments over the past decade of whether or not college athletes should be paid to play. Many argue that they do not have time to get real jobs because the requirements for the sport that they participate in are far too demanding. Others cite that these athletes are provided full scholarships to attend the schools at which they are playing the sport. However regardless of the argument, I still feel that college athletes should not be paid to play.…

College players need to get paid for what they do. When college players do not get paid, they do not get paid for the great things that they do on national TV. That's not even if you win. Sure student athletes get free things like free tuition, board, room fees, and food, but paying players would give them money for things like laundry, late night snacks, food for restaurants when on the road, and just different things. The three reasons why student athletes should get paid is because playing a college sport is like having a job, college players make money for…

College athletes deserve to be paid due to a number of reasons. To begin with, the athletes happen to be the ones responsible for the huge sums of revenue that universities receive from the college athletic competitions (Jonathan, p. 1). The rise in popularity of sports in the American society, coupled with its high profit margin for the colleges due to commercialization has led to creation of much revenue for the universities. It is however very unfortunate that the student-athletes responsible for this, end up without even a penny of the revenue that they helped bring forth. There have also been contracts worth billions of dollars being signed between the universities and various broadcasting stations but the colleges still end up not paying the students. This can be better described as capitalism due to its lop-sided nature where the student-athletes do their best to aid in revenue creation for their universities but get nothing out of it.…

College athletes should get paid and there are various reasons why they deserve some form of monetary compensation. The typical American work week is said to be 40 hours, “while the typical division 1 college football player devotes 43.4 hours per week to his sport” (Walch 1). That is 3.3 more hours than the typical American works in a week, who by the way is being paid no less than $7.25 per hour. If a student has 10 hours of class each week and puts…

Many people think why should college athletes be treated any different that regular college kids? I mean sure they represent the school and are more publicly known but should not all kids be treated the same? If some football player says he doesn’t have enough money to buy new shoes I bet there is another college kid in the same boat. They are college kids; they are supposed to be poor. On the other hand, student athletes do spend an extreme amount of time on athletic functions, which takes away their focus from school. Although the controversy over student athletes being paid is a relatively new idea, the matter could become very controversial if it is left unaddressed. This issue has become more pressing as more and more student athletes are found guilty of taking bribes from professional sports agencies while they are still in college.…

If college athletes were paid, they would not be robbed of any college experiences and many of them would stay the full four years and receive a degree which will help them in the future after they retire from the sport. It would also be fair that they are paid compensation for working as hard as professional athletes as well as the money and exposure they give college sports which is very similar to the money that professional leagues…
