Bobby Rushton Duties and Responsibilities of the Athletic Director:

New Canaan Athletic Dept. Mission Statement:

NCHS Athletics strives for excellence by providing opportunities for student athletes to participate in programs that are designed to develop meaningful standards of athletic performance, leadership, commitment to one’s team, critical thinking, problem solving, self-discipline, self-confidence, scholarship, community service and relations and appropriate conduct within the educational and social environments of NCHS.

More than 70% of all New Canaan High School students participate in school athletics.

The Athletic Department has 32 head coaches, and 69 sub-varsity coaches.

New Canaan High School is an active member of:
The Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference - FCIAC
The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference - CIAC
The Connecticut High School Coaches Association - CHSCA

Fall Sport Offerings:
Boys: Football, Soccer, Cross Country
Girls:Field Hockey, Soccer, Cross Country, Girls Swimming & Diving, Volleyball, Cheerleading

Winter Sport Offerings:
Boys: Basketball, Wrestling, Ice Hockey, Indoor Track, Boys Swimming & Diving, Squash (club)
Girls:Basketball, Gymnastics, Ice Hockey, Indoor Track, Cheerleading, Squash (club)

Spring Sport Offerings:
Boys: Baseball, Track, Golf, Tennis, Lacrosse, Crew (club)
Girls:Softball, Track, Golf, Tennis, Lacrosse, Crew (club)

The Role of the Athletic Director

1. Coordinate overall athletic program (including cheerleading) and coaching staff.
2. Submit a list to the Principal the anticipated needs of the athletic program and anticipated needs in each sport, and to see that each coach has the requested and approved equipment by the time specified.
3. Coordinate expenditures so that each sport remains within the designated budgetary limits.
4. Manage and direct all home athletic events.
5. Arrange for all athletic evens away from home, including cheerleader transportation
