This book is written in a very light-hearted and readable style. The author uses lower level vocabulary and humor to keep the reader engaged. He also uses very understandable examples to explain complex medical language. He talks the reader through genetics in a simple and slow writing technique that makes it easy to comprehend complex situations. He does not rush through topics or use high level vocabulary that could possibly confuse the reader and cause them to become disengaged in the book. Instead he thoroughly explains each topic in numerous styles so that all readers can understand what he is trying to tell them. An example of this simple and somewhat humorous explanation technique he uses can be found in the way he tells the reader about why humans have evolved to fend off diseases better than any other species. Sticklebacks are small fish that live in the oceans, streams and lakes across the northern hemisphere (Millington, 2013). There are three types of triple spine stickleback fish that live in the wild; marine, sea-run, and freshwater. The marine fish only live and breed in the ocean. The sea-run fish live in the ocean but they travel to fresh water to breed. Freshwater sticklebacks of course live in the freshwater all their lives (Leady, 2013). Evolution is the change in allele frequencies of a population over successive generations. Sticklebacks are good for studying evolution because they show evolution from a fully armored fish to one with little armor in just 13 generations (Millington, 2013). The freshwater sticklebacks adapted to an environment where there weren’t nearly as many predators as there are in the ocean. Do changes in body structure reflect evolution? Yes they show that un-needed physical features are lost to help the population survive and adapt to a new environment. The pelvic girdle and pelvic spines will change over generations. I predict that I will find specific changes in two experiments that indicate that evolution is occurring in stickleback fish.…
Asian carp are threatening to do a lot of damage in the Great Lakes. Asian carp are an aggressive and adaptable fish that can easily out compete other species for food and habitat. Currently there are carp populations in 23 states and they have completely taken over portions of the Illinois and Mississippi rivers (Antonacci, 2014). They reproduce and spread quickly, making them very dangerous to the aquatic ecosystem. Beren Robinson performed remarkable field study of threespine sticklebacks. These fish closely relate to ecology and evolution. The researchers original findings are different than that of Robinson’s field study. His hypothesis states that the threespine sticklebacks varied phenotypes are the handiwork of natural selection supporting the discrepancy in the population. Diet and the environmental conditions are the variables found in this study. The ecologists also used evidence and observation to quantify results by using information from other studies and experiments. Robinson’s study relates to evolution and natural selection, both of these play an important part in ecology.
