It is important that the university has social support networks in place as they can play a vital role in the success or failure of the student. Students have to put their academic life first in university. (Rienties, Beausaert, Grohert , Niemantsverdriet & Kommers, 2012, p.687)states that Students as much as they have to put their studies first, need to be socially active as well. Levy and Earl (2012) also argued that the lack of social support results in loneliness, isolation and feelings of insecurity in relation to work load and the potential to lose motivation. One student in Urquhart and Pooley (2007, p.84) explains that walking into a lecture or tutorial and knowing familiar faces is reassuring thus making the experience more enjoyable. Events that encourage social interaction are likely to make students feel less stressed during their transition as they feel supported by their peers and other people around them. According to Urquhart and Pooley (2007, p.89) students that with more social support are better equipped to deal with the work load and adapt to the new learning environment better than those with no social support. For those students that have issues with time management the (SEC) can introduce time management courses. The (SEC) can also assign a second or third year student that can help the first year student on developing a time management plan. This could really help the first year student because the third and second year students would have already gone through the transition stage and would be able to give the first year student some good tips on how to manage time
