Attack of the 50 Foot Woman This cult classic B-movie, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, provides one of the most comprehensive cross-section perspective of popular American society's fears in the late 1950's. With the country in turmoil, recovering from the recent WWII and gearing up for an impending war with Russia, Americans were fearful for their future. Their fears weren't just of an attack from the silent north, but also of the importance of females in the workplace and at home. Women were gaining more power and respect, striving for equality and rights. From cheating husbands, corrupt authority figures, alien encounters and giant, angry women seeking revenge: This movie has it all! It was the age of cheating husbands, constantly trying to find a new, youthful lover to make themselves feel younger. Our story begins by summarizing Nancy's arisotcratic life and explaining the short comings of her husband. He was caught cheating on Nancy with a younger, more exciting female. After running away with his newfound love, Nancy's husband, Harry, realizes that he's broke and needs her money to survive. Being a kind and gentle woman, she easily accepts his apology and forgives him his sins. Everything I've learned from Mad Men has taught me that this kind of thing was very prominent in those days. Unlike most females of the time, though, Nancy doesn't take well to catching Harry at it again. At the time of release of this film, America was engulfed in the ever prominent Cold War. The idea that the Russians would attack and invade America at any given moment was on everybody's minds. Air sirens were planted on top of police precincts in even the smallest, podunk towns in the middle of nowhere for the sole purpose of warning its denizens of the impending Soviet invasion.
