Attending and Responding Skills in Social Work.( Assessment 1). Attending. The first part of ARPI is applied before there is any direct involvement face to face with the client. a). Location: The interview between the social worker and the client depends on what room that is available by the “agency”. Easy access to the agency’s location and the interviewing room is important to the client, and therefore the agency should allow room that have to be used that might have a negative impact on the client.
b). Immediate Condition.: A comfortable, but modest setting suggests that the social worker is treating the client with respect. For example, a quiet room with confidentiality is ideal. Such factors like lights, forceful colours and wall posters need consideration, because this would divert the client during interview, and external disturbances like noise and other interruptions. A sound proof room is an advantage, because if sound can be filter into the room, the client is likely to be on guard in case the conversation can be filter outside.
c). Listening and Observing.: Observation skills develop active listening, and together they reinforce sensitivity (Kadushin 1997p.50), and allow the social worker to hear more accurately about the client’s experiences. Social worker should be thoughtful to client’s feelings and what the client says. Pay attention in a non-judgemental way and to be fully exposed to the client make it easier to the client to transport more information. Observing skills involve “ locking in” what is conveyed (Hermansson.1998.p.57), and this help to improve understanding and frame the social worker’s responses.
d).Non-Verbal Behaviours: This is when the client conveys information non verbally like body postures, eye gazes, and voice pitch. For example, a client can strengthen and emphasize what is being said, by nods his/ her head and that’s mean it
