In To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus Finch said, “Courage is not a man with a gun in his hand” (Lee 149). This show that Atticus believed that courage was more than just some object on the outside. Sometimes, people try to use objects to prove they are courageous, like having a gun or having the strongest muscle and intimidate others, but that isn’t courage. Courage is being able to fight for what is right, and not being the intimidating. Atticus also said, "As you grow older you’ll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don’t you forget it— whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, of how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash”(Lee 200). This shows Atticus’s courage to stand against the common beliefs. So, regardless of popular culture Atticus showed his kids to stand for what they believe in. Atticus demonstrated that it is best to standing against the popular belief for what is right. Furthermore, he showed that no material object can produce courage, because courage comes from within.
