quite easy. Despite hopelessness of the case with Tom Robinson , Atticus is eager to take up this case and does his best. It characterizes him as a very brave and responsible person, since this organization was terrible and famous for their bloody deals. He is an honest man who represents morality and justice without paying attention to other people’s opinions about background, status and color of skin. Atticus can be characterized as a kind-hearted man as he really sympathized with Tom and felt indignant for the falsely accused man. He is a good speaker and knows how to attract the attention of the jury as he is professional of his job, but he is sometimes overly optimistic and in the end his unshakable hope is still ruined as Tom Robinson is found guilty.
Atticus tries to persuade the jury of Tom Robinson’s innocence using direct address to the audience, 1st person pronoun “we” and contractions that’s why his speech is a vivid example of oratorical style.
Atticus Finch uses a lot of stylistic devices in his speech in order to persuade the jury. The most frequently used is the epithet to contribute to the expressiveness of the lawyer’s speech. For example, a quiet, respectable, humble Negro; the cynical confidence. The metaphor is another figure of speech used in the text: it requires no sifting of complicated facts; no code mattered to her before she broke it, but it came crashing down on her afterwards. To produce a humorous effect and convey a negative meaning the irony is used by the author to show the attitude to certain facts or events: so quite respectable, humble Negro who had the unmitigated temerity to feel sorry for a white woman. There are several examples of simile which are used by Atticus to show an unexpected confrontation of two objects: we know is in itself a lie as black as Tom Robinson’s skin...; this case is as simple as black and white. The speaker intensely chooses such word as black to refer the audience to Tom Robinson’s racial belonging which must not take any matter for them. In spite of lexical stylistic devices a number of syntactical stylistic devices are used. The one of them which helps to catch the reader’s attention is the repetition, in the text we find different types of it. Among them is
catch repetition: …which she had done in an effort to get rid of her own guilt. I say, guilt, gentlemen…; … she has merely broken a rigid and time-honored code of our society, a code so severe that whoever breaks it is honored from our midst…Another syntactical stylistic device is anaphora and parallel construction is used by the smart lawyer: … some Negroes lie, some Negroes are immoral, some Negro men are not to be trusted around women …” in order to persuade that not all Negroes are evil and bad. The repetition is often used to make the speaker’s meaning clear, to lay greater emphasis on his statements. … It was interesting to notice that in the speech of Atticus a gradation takes place: first, the speaker mentions the name of Thomas Jefferson, then the Supreme Court and, finally, the name of God.
The main problem raised by the author is an issue of justice. The message of Hapter Lee is that in the face of court each and every human should be treated honestly, no matter what his social status, education or colour of skin is. This value should be given to children from the very infantry. I absolutely agree with the Atticus’s belief that all human beings must be accepted and treated equally.
