Atticus Finch Integrity Analysis

Imagine your whole city looks up to you. Everyone comes to you for advice, uses you as an example, you are the most popular of the popular at school. Well, what if one day as you are walking down the hall to your 5th-period class with your friends, you saw the weird kid that everyone made fun of tripped, causing his papers to fly into the air and fall like confetti? You have the choice of helping him, or not. If you help him you would lose all of the respect you have worked hard for and earned. If you do not help him nothing bad will happen, but you will live with knowing you could have done something but did not. What would you choose? This is where integrity comes into play. Atticus Finch from the novel To Kill a Mockingbird was in the same situation. He chooses to help. This is why Atticus’ most valuable virtue was his integrity. Atticus was tolerant of all the members of Maycomb County. He demonstrates his tolerance when Walter Cunningham stays for dinner, ”(Walter) poured syrup on his vegetables with a very generous hand” (32). Scout then protests about the amount of syrup that had been used by Walter. Atticus understands why he did it, Walter Cunningham saw something he rarely had an opportunity to consume and he took advantage of it. Atticus was open-minded enough to accept that. In addition, he shows his tolerance towards Tom Robinson when no one else did. He
Integrity possesses courage along with many other characteristics. Integrity without courage just was not the same. You can see this being demonstrated during the trial when Heck Tate puts his say in the case, “Well I can tell you why I did not. It was necessary...” (224). He goes along with the false story proposed by Mr. Bob Ewell and lies over and over again. Heck Tate was very brave and courageous, but he does not have as much integrity.
