Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird takes place in rural south Alabama in a town called Maycomb during the Great Depression, in a time when many Southerners both accepted and expected discrimination toward minorities. Atticus Finch, a widowed father of two, trying to raise his children well, teaches them to see things from another’s perspective. Lee incorporates the crucial quality of empathy in the feelings of the characters and expresses the empathetic theme with the influence of racism and prejudice in Maycomb society within the main characters Scout, Jem, and Atticus.…
In “To Kill A Mockingbird,” by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch is a moral man because he sets good examples for his children because he portrays a leading figure by using his words, not fists, not judging a person until you get to understand who they are, and being able to get along with just about anyone. Atticus believed in fighting with words, not fists. “Hold your head high and keep those fists down”(Lee 76), as the story develops, Atticus reveals that he is a moral man by believing in the power of words, and that fists are not necessary in settling a feud/argument, I also envision that this applies especially to him because he is lawyer and uses words in his…
The verdict of a court case lies squarely on Atticus’ closing statement that needs to be powerful in order to win. In “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, a court case takes Maycomb by surprise. A case between an African American man and a poor white woman makes for a difficult situation for its residents. The jury needs to be able to analyze the information and evidence given from the witnesses to give an honest conclusion. Depending on how the jury swings, it could put an innocent man’s life at risk. Atticus Finch needs to use many forms of strong rhetoric when giving his closing argument to convince the defendant not guilty.…
When Atticus makes the statement that Tom Robinson has served time, he is making an ethos argument on behalf of Tom. He is proving Tom has nothing to hide, and he tells the truth. When Atticus makes the closing statement where he speaks to the fact that there is no evidence that Tom could have committed the crime he was accused of besides two eyewitnesses with highly improbable testimonies, he makes a logos argument. He is stating the facts and trying to shed light on the truth, which was only spoken by Tom. When Atticus argues against the common opinion that Tom, because he is black, does not have the capacity to feel sorry for someone, simply because of his race, and makes a pathos argument. It is a pathos argument because he is propelling…

In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch’s purpose at the current time was to persuade the jury that Tom Robinson was an innocent man, Tom was black field worker that had been accused of beating and raping a young girl, and at the time, 1930s, if a black man was accused of doing anything to white female, they were found guilty, plain and simple. But Atticus uses, pathos ethos and logos during his speech to the jury, which allows him to effectively demonstrate the real aspects of his personality and morals. Since Tom was black, many did not want to represent him in court, due to his race. But Atticus, saw the challenge did not back away from it. He wanted to prove to the jurors that Tom Robinson was an innocent man and that he should…
Abraham Lincoln once said, “You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today.” Atticus Finch, in many ways, lives this quote everyday by understanding what has to be done today in order to avoid future consequences of today’s mistakes. Atticus is a kind-hearted, slow-tempered, wise man, who always knows the right thing to say.…
Outside, the greens and browns run past me like dogs chasing cats as the tracks flew by like little birds. The train nosily rattles underneath my seat, rumbling along with the rocks. I am on train from Maycomb County back to Meridian, Mississippi. This summer’s been good to me in Maycomb. When I first arrived in Maycomb, it was a disappointment, all I found was boredom. Although, I changed my mind the day I met a funny-named boy who had soft brown hair and his sister, who lived in breeches. They were called, Jem and Scout from the loving Finch Family. The Finches consist of the couple, Atticus and his dead wife, their children, Jem and Scout along with Calpurnia who works for them.…
“There is something in our world that makes men lose their heads- they couldn’t be fair if they tried. In our courts, when a white man is against a blackman, the white man will always win. They’re ugly, but those are the facts of life” (Lee 295 ; ch. 23). To Kill a Mockingbird by: Harper Lee is a historical fiction novel about white people not being fair to blacks and segregation in 1930 in Maycomb, Alabama during the Great Depression. Appearance should not affect the way one is treated. You shouldn't be looked at by appearance but by legitimate actions.…

It is just a very special thing when someone looks up to another. When they have a certain sparkle in their eyes. There are not many people in this world that can trigger this effect. The only person that can truly represent this is Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird. He has so many amazing; inspiring qualities it is hard to only describe him in a few. Throughout the novel, Atticus’ qualities shine more overcoming and bright. Who would not look up to a person like Atticus? He shows so many traits such as being: fair, courageous, and calm. These are only some of the traits that Atticus can use as a lawyer and admirable father in Maycomb.…
I believe in judging someone by their actions and character rather than by the color of their skin and sexuality. This I believe because there is good and bad in all of us. The color of our skin does not depict the flaws we have. In the second amendment it states that all men are created equal, but we still do not treat each other equally. Defending Tom Robinson was not easy because I knew that from the minute Mayella opened her mouth Tom was a dead man. But everyone including a black man deserves a second chance. How could I ever tell my own children “You never really understand a person until you consider things from their point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” if I didn’t pick up Tom’s case because I was afraid of what people would think of me. When people say things about me like “Atticus Finch is the same in his house as he is on the public streets” why would I prove them wrong? You are only as good as you portray yourself to be. But when you are a black man in the town of Maycomb, Alabama you were never dealt the good hand to begin with. Sadly Tom never got a second chance. Tom was a good man but because of the color of his skin he was not treated as fairly as the rest of us.…
MAYCOMB – Yesterday Afternoon, a mad dog wandered its way into the streets of Maycomb. The dog was said to be walking lopsided and twitching. Neighbours watched as local lawyer Atticus Finch put the dog down.…
