He is thought as inferior to other fathers, according to Scout. However, Atticus is revealed to have an exceptional aim, to the point of being nicknamed “One-Shot Finch”. Despite that, he appears to be very humble about it, not having mentioned it to his children once. Miss Maudie explains the situation to Scout, “‘I think maybe he put his gun down when he realized that God had given him an unfair advantage over most living things” (Lee 130).
