Project Attributes

A project has a unique purpose. Every project should have a well-defined objective. For example, Anne Roberts, the Director of the Project Management
Office in the opening case, might sponsor an information technology collaboration project to develop a list and initial analysis of potential information technology projects that might improve operations for the company. The unique purpose of this project would be to create a collaborative report with ideas from people throughout the company. The results would provide the basis for further discussions and projects. As in this example, projects result in a unique product, service, or result.

A project is temporary. A project has a definite beginning and a definite end.
In the information technology collaboration project, Anne might form a team of people to work immediately on the project, and then expect a report and an executive presentation of the results in one month.

A project is developed using progressive elaboration. Projects are often defined broadly when they begin, and as time passes, the specific details of the project become clearer. Therefore, projects should be developed in increments.

A project team should develop initial plans and then update them with more detail based on new information. The project team might decide to prepare a questionnaire for people to fill in as they submit their ideas to improve the quality of the inputs.

A project requires resources, often from various areas. Resources include people, hardware, software, and other assets. Many projects cross departmental or other boundaries to achieve their unique purposes. For the information technology collaboration project, people from information technology, marketing,

Looking back at my Computer Analysis Project about my food intake, I found two major problems in my diet. The first problem is that I have high cholesterol. My intake of cholesterol is high. The DRI is < 300 mg and my intake is 357 mg. The percentage for my cholesterol is 118.9%. I didn’t expect that my cholesterol will be this high. Having high cholesterol can cause major health problems. It can cause you to have heart problems. There can be a blockage in the arteries. It is when the cholesterol blocks the blood going to the brain and heart. When there is to much fat and plague, it builds up on the walls of the arteries and becomes hardened. The arteries become narrowed down, causing the blood and oxygen to move slowly to the heart and to the brain. When the blood is reduced, you can have a…

When people talk about scope, they immediately think time and cost. Time and cost are outputs of scope. Determining scope is a different exercise. In the context of this white paper, when we talk about defining the scope, we are talking about developing a common understanding as to what is included in, or excluded from, a project. We are not talking about deciding how long it will take, or how much it will cost. That comes after the scope is defined. If we were looking for a car, we would first define the scope. For example we want a 4-cylinder front wheel drive with seating for 2 adults and 2 children, and less than 2 years old. Maybe you also want it to be a red convertible. Having defined the scope, you can calculate cost and time. How much you will have to spend and how long you will take to buy it. If you get the scope wrong, the time and cost will be wrong.…
