A Modern Venus
Andy Warhol’s piece titled Details of Renaissance Paintings (Sandro Botticelli,
Birth of Venus, 1482) represents the face of the goddess Venus. This piece was made in
1984 as a depiction of the face of Venus from the earlier painting The Birth of Venus by
Sandro Botticelli that was completed in 1482. The piece’s present location is the
Arkansas Arts Center, and its original location is the Andy Warhol Museum in
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The piece is acrylic and silkscreen ink on linen, and it can only be seen from one side because it is hanging on the wall.
The work is a colorful representation of the face of the goddess Venus as depicted earlier in The Birth of Venus by Botticelli. However, Warhol uses more colors in his work. Venus’s face and neck are pink while her hair is black, red, orange, and yellow. In contrast, the background is a solid light blue color. In Details of Renaissance Paintings,
Venus’s face and hair are emphasized and the dominant elements are her hair because of the warm colors and her gaze.
Warhol uses implied lines to direct viewers’ eyes around the artwork. The implied lines are the strands of Venus’s hair that direct viewers’ eyes to the right bottom, middle, and top because the strands are going in each of these directions. One bundle of

hair goes down to the bottom of the piece on the left side close to her face. This bundle of hair brings some direction to the left side, but not a lot because the left side is mostly empty. However, this emptiness is balanced asymmetrically by Venus’s gaze toward the bottom left corner and the light color used in the empty space. The light color of the empty space is visually

    The Birth of Venus painted by Sandro Botticelli from 1484-1486, depicts the birth of Venus into the world. The painting shows Venus the goddess of love and beauty coming out of the sea as if she was coming into the human world as a beautiful woman.     Sandro Botticelli has created this Tempura on canvas painting , it measures 172.5 x 278.5cm and is located in the Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence .The Birth of Venus belongs to the renaissance period and is not a representation of a Christian legend but an interpretation of a classical Myth. This painting is one of a series which Botticelli was inspired to paint after the written descriptions by the 2nd century historian Lucian. It depicts the classical goddess Venus emerging from the water on a shell , she is being blown towards shore by the Zephyrs (symbols of spiritual passions) there is also an Ore waiting on shore to distribute her with a purple flowered cloak. Its function is to communicate of point of view , as to how the Greek goddess ,Venus, was created. Botticelli has used line and tone to create the effect of a 3-dimensional shell ,the shell appears to be gliding along the top of the water The Birth of Venus is a linear one, yet Venus is depicted with very soft lines, separating her from the rest of the figures. He has also used a repetitious form of brush-work to create the textured effect of choppy water. The central figure of Venus is slightly moved to the right of the centre line ,while the figures have magnificently drawn outlines and almost appear to be cut-outs placed on an ideal background .At a glance ,Venus is so beautiful that we fail to notice her imperfections; the unnatural length of her neck ,the steep fall of her shoulders and the unusual way her left arm is attached to her body remain unobtrusive. There seems to be a build up of water around the base of the shell suggesting movement and her location in relation to the shoreline. The focal point of the artwork is definitely the central figure of Venus; she appears to be emphasised more-so than the other figures.     Both painting are representational pieces of art due to the fact they both have recognizable subjects. In Botticellis’ composition the scene and characters are more fictional, despite the fact that Fragonards’ composition is more realistic in its scene and character depiction. There is iconography present in both compositions. Botticells’ composition is a pertinent description for the era identified as the Renaissance, which revived interest in the art of classical Greece and Rome. The Renaissance was a period of new and altered understanding in which transformed the European world and laid a founding foundation for modern society. “The birth of Venus” composition combined what the Greeks idealized as human figures with a Renaissance concern for thought and sentiment.     Titian made his Venus of Urbino in Italy 1538 during the Venetian Renaissance. Titian has domesticated Venus by moving her to an indoor setting, engaging her with the viewer, and making her sensuality explicit. Titian’s composition is and use of color is a common indicator of his Venetian Renaissance style. The frankness of Venus's expression is often noted; she stares straight at the viewer, unconcerned with her nudity, making it clear she is ready to please. In her right hand she holds a posy of roses whilst her left covers her groin, provocatively placed in the center of the composition. In the near background is a dog, often a symbol of either fidelity or sexual profligacy; that the animal is asleep hints that the woman portrayed is unfaithful. Manet’s Olympia was done in France, 1863, during the Realism period. Olympia’s title alludes to a socially ambitious prostitute of the same name in a novel and play by Alexander Dumas the younger. At first Manet seems to pay homage to Titian’s subject matter and composition. However, Manet made his modern counterpart the antithesis of Titian’s. Titian’s female is curvaceous and softly rounded, Manet’s is angular and flattened; Titian’s Colors are warm and rich (Venetian Ren style), Manet’s are cold and harsh, like a photograph; Titian’s Venus looks coyly at the (male) spectator, Manet’s Olympia appears indifferent. The relationship with Olympia is underscored by the reaction of her cat, which—unlike the sleeping dog in Titian—arches its back at us. Finally, instead of looking up at the viewer, Olympia gazes down at us, indicating that she is in the position of power and we are subordinate, just as the black servant brings her bouquet.     The “Roman Amphitheatre, Valencia, Spain” photographed by Henri Cartier-Bresson is taken from the focal/vantage point of a bull and shows an attendant watching the action from a rectangular window. The inside doors of the Valencia Area and the positioning of this photograph makes it clear that Cartier-Bresson has put much thought into this as he has entered the area to take it. The composition of the “Roman Amphitheatre” is extremely complex and this reflects the photographer’s cubism influences. Every major structural element is fractured in this photograph. Some example of the is that the arena doors are ajar, the number seven which is in two abstract forms, the attendant’s circular glasses are awry with one lens catching the light but the other remaining transparent, and the foreground figure’s body is also link to a faceless counterpart wearing identical clothing which give the effect that he has been beheaded by the door. “The picture as a whole illustrates the avant-garde theory of simultaneous multiple vision and is sophisticated critique of the bull’s-eye school of photographic composition.     La Primavera was painted by Sandro Boticelli, it is tempera on panel. The piece was painted in 1481-1482 (though there is dispute about that as well.) Primavera can now be found in the Galleria degli Uffizi, in Florence, Italy. The painting depicts 9 people. The one my eye was first drawn to was Venus, in the center. The other bodies in the painting part as to not obscure her image. Venus is surrounded by an arch of trees, forming what could be interpreted as either a halo of sorts or just a reference to an architectural arch during that time period. Next, my eye was drawn to the Three Graces. During this time, in Roman Statuary, many sculptors would use the Three Graces to show the body in the round, showing the body three times, with slightly different angles. Next to the Three Graces, you see Mercury, the God of War. Mercury has been shown with his weapon put away, to show that he is at peace in Venus’s garden. He’s also shown pushing away the clouds in the left hand corner. On the right hand side of the picture, Zephyrus the God of wind is shown abducting the figure of Chloris. Chloris is the goddess of flowers, so she is identical with the Roman Flora, who is shown right next to her. And then above the whole scene is Cupid, Venus’s son, unleashing his arrow among the Three Graces.…
