Life as We Knew It by Susan Pfeffer is a science fiction novel describing what life would be like if a meteor hit the moon. There would be a change in the tides which would cause severe weather all over the world. In the story, tsunamis, tornados, earthquakes, and volcano eruptions were diminishing the world population by an unimaginable amount. This story focuses on Beth and her family. I found it interesting how, at first, no one really believed it was a big deal and figured things would go back to normal soon. Supplies began running out and things quickly became every-man-for-himself, people’s survival instincts kicking in. Towards the beginning of these tragic events, Beth talks about how she never realised how all the little things in…

The texts, “Undaunted Courage” and “The Way To Rainy Mountain” depict the land as a spiritual entity that’s worth being worshipped and respected as shown by man’s praise of it. The way man, rather than exploit it for profit, respects the land through animism shows their gratitude for it. From the detailed descriptions that give the reader an illustration of what man has seen, it is clear to say that man had this religious relationship again, but was also in tune with the lay of the land.…

Furthermore, tradition is passed down generation to generation doing the same thing knowingly it is the right thing to do. Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" and Leslie Marmon Silko's "The Man to Send Rain Clouds." Both authors illustrate the importance of the tradition. How each of the characters values the tradition that they carry into their society. They depict how culture can affect their lives. In the story “ Rainy River” the author goes through a lot of discomfort, confusion, and anxiety. He intentionally chooses words and phrases to evoke those emotions in his readers. “In June of 1968, a month after graduating from Macalester College, I was drafted to fight a war I hated.” The author didn’t want to fight in the war. He believed that it was wrong. He goes on to explain these feelings by giving reasons why he shouldn’t have to fight in the war. The author also states “ I was wired and jittery. My skin felt too tight. After supper one evening I vomited and went back to my cabin and lay down for a few moments and then vomited again;” The author showed his emotions in this statement a lot because it shows how anxious he was. He is confused…

The weatherpersons on television, always eager for ratings-boosting disasters, had predicted a fierce autumn storm for New England, with driving rain and high winds. Brad Morris, who worked at home while his wife, Jane, managed a boutique on Boston’s Newbury Street, glanced out his windows now and then at the swaying trees—oaks still tenacious of their rusty leaves, maples letting go in gusts of gold and red—but was unimpressed by the hyped news event. Rain came down heavily a half hour at a time, then pulled back into a silvery sky of fast-moving, fuzzy-bottomed clouds. The worst seemed to be over, when, in midafternoon, his computer died under his eyes. The financial figures he had been painstakingly assembling swooned as a group, sucked into the dead blank screen like glittering water pulled down a drain. Around him, the house seemed to sigh, as all its lights and little engines, its computerized timers and indicators, simultaneously shut down. The sound of wind and rain lashing the trees outside infiltrated the silence. A beam creaked. A loose shutter banged. The drip from a plugged gutter tapped heavily, like a bully nagging for attention, on the wooden cover of a cellar-window well.…

Ignorance and materialism negatively affects humans some way or another, and society only increases these lifestyles. Whether or not we believe it, ignorance and materialism is a daily part in our lives today; thus, we cannot live without it. We try to ease our problems by blindingly accepting society’s norms and trends. Because we cannot formulate our own ideals and ways of life, we live in a false sense of justice and peace. In Tony Hoagland’s “Hard Rain,” the speaker witnesses these faults in our behavior at a shopping mall; however, he, similarly, is not able to escape that reality. The larger meaning of this poem, that we have no sense of individualism and morality, is specified by the author’s usage of diction and the disappointing, humorous, and controversial tone he uses to prove it.…

Over the past four weeks I was assigned to observe and record current weather data and highlight the trends that could be seen. In order to do this I used an atomic weather center for the majority of my data. However I did correlate my findings with websites such as www.wunderground.com , and www.weather.com. I did also sometimes use weather instruments that were provided to me such as a compass, an instrument containing a magnetized pointer that shows the direction of magnetic north and bearings from it, and a wind meter, a device used for measuring wind speed. All of my recordings were taken from my home in Cheyenne, WY. There were variations at times from my recorded data and what was recorded by these other sources, but that can be explained by many different situations. Some of the variations in wind speed for example could have been that my house was blocking more wind than in other areas it was recorded or that the temperature differences could have simply been due to the amount of sunlight my trees did or did not block from my weather station location at the time I recorded my data. Regardless of these little technicalities there are significant trends that can be seen with my data, my hope is that I can share these findings in a clear and insightful manner.…

By the global conveyor belt transferring heat, it affects the climate. The Gulf Stream is a part of the thermohaline circulation, it is another current that allows Western Europe to be warmer in winter then any other country at the same latitude. The La Niña can be referred to as the extensive cooling of the Pacific Ocean, it is often accompanied by much warmer sea water then the surface temperatures (SSTs) in the western Pacific Ocean, and the north of Australia. The El Niño is currently the best known extreme of the Southern Oscillation, it is also classified as one of the most important influences on the climate in Australia. (Pearson, 2015). Surface currents keep the Earth's temperatures normal. As surface currents travel, they absorb the heat from the tropical regions surrounding the equator and release it into the colder regions near the North and South Pole. Deep water currents move extremely slow,…

    Bradbury Home Description

As the reader sees in the world depicted by Bradbury, the human race was completely wiped out, leaving nothing but a single standing home on a hill. The home which once belonged to a family of four was now surrounded by nothing but the ruins of what used to be. We can only assume that Bradbury was insinuating that this was the end of the world as we knew it. The year was 2026 and this house was very special in many ways. This house is what we would consider to be a smart home; it cooked, cleaned and did every task in between for its owners. The home basically was the textbook definition of convenience, the owners never even had to lift a finger to do daily chores around the house. What made this house really special was that although there…

Research Paper Trend and variability of rainfall in Tigray, Northern Ethiopia: Analysis of meteorological data and farmers’ perception Accepted 11th May, 2013 ABSTRACT Rainfall is the most important but variable climatic parameter in the semiarid tropics. In this study, the trend and variability of rainfall were compared with the perception of farmers in northern Ethiopia. Daily rainfall data obtained from five meteorological stations located in different agroecological zones were used to determine trends in annual and seasonal totals, onset and cessation dates, length of growing period (LGP) and dry spell length. Sen’s estimator and Mann-Kendall's statistical tests were used for trend detection.…
