The wars between the Axis Power and the Allied and the dropping of atomic bombs in Japan were usually what come into a discussion about World War II. Besides those events, the most horrific and considerably inhumane time was the Holocaust. The Holocaust was a period time during World War II, when Adolf Hitler launched a “movement” to kill all the Jews and anyone he deemed as lower than him in his territories. Most people now looked back at history around this time and believed that the SS and policemen killed the Jews because of brainwashing and forcing. But, in the book Ordinary Men, Christopher R. Browning argued that it was not the case. He argued that these police officers were ordinary men just like everybody else and they were not forced…

The holocaust presented the horrors committed against human beings at the hands of other humans. Adolf Hitler obviously is the one everyone blames for destroying the Jewish population but is he really the only one at fault? Who actually committed the actual genocide? I wasn’t actually fully aware of the atrocities committed during the holocaust until I read Ordinary Men in which Christopher R. Browning explains how men who weren’t even ardent NAZI were capable of such atrocities.…

The policemen of Reserve Battalion 101 did meet their end and consequences. After Hitler committed suicide and the Allied officially ended the war in Europe, many of the policemen returned to their prewar occupations. Some of them, such as Hoffman and Wohlauf, remained in the police career while others were able to find postwar jobs. But, none of them were able to live freely as they were before World War II. Being on of the battalion that killed many Jews, they got interrogated and tried. Some policemen and Major Trapp all charged against their crime of killing seventy-eight Poles during their killing period and sentenced to death and executed while some got thrown into jail from three or more years (144). Around late 1962 and early 1967, most of the former members of the battalion got interrogated as well. Consequently, most of them ended up in jail for more than five years while only a few lucky ones did not go to…

In Ray Bradbury’s “The Illustrated Man,” Bradbury writes a series of short science-fictional stories. While all of these stories take place in different worlds such as Venus, Mars, and Earth, all of them convey a different message. Bradbury takes his fictional writings and makes them real for his readers. He skillfully does this by tying the stories within, “The Illustrated Man,” to controversial issues being faced in America at that period in time. There are two stories in particular that exhibit Bradbury’s knack of bringing contentious issues to light: The Concrete Mixer and The Veldt. Bradbury effectively uses literary devices in The Concrete Mixer and The Veldt to secretly critique…

Christopher Browning describes how the Reserve Police Battalion 101, like the rest of German society, was immersed in a flood of racist and anti-Semitic propaganda. Browning describes how the Order Police provided indoctrination both in basic training and as an ongoing practice within each unit. Many of the members were not prepared for the killing of Jews. The author examines the reasons some of the police members did not shoot. The physiological effect of isolation, rejection, and ostracism is examined in the context of being assigned to a foreign land with a hostile population. The contradictions imposed by the demands of conscience on the one hand and the norms of the battalion on the other are discussed. Ordinary Men provides…

Joseph Cornell was an uncommon artist from the twentieth century who created an enormous amount of compositions through the art of collaging. Cornell, a New York native, patterned his works of art after the European design of art also known as “Surrealism.” In the early 1930’s, Joseph Cornell began his career as an artist, while still being a working class American citizen, his artworks were quite low budget. He began his career by creating his art with found objects from the city along with displaying them in wooden boxes. When he first began creating his themed compositions, he started by creating three dimensional works, later in his career, he began using the two dimensional effect without the box frameworks. Shutter Island, produced in 2010 and directed by Martin Scorsese, is a psychological thriller film that portrays psychological treatments in the 1950’s. Martin Scorsese’s alteration of the Dennis Lehane novel, Shutter Island, is in fact a horror movie, but it will not come across as your average present-day horror film. Typically directors take ghosts, monsters, vampires, or possessed people and develop a film to scare its viewers, and it more than likely always does. The average horror film filled with a group of “hills have eyes looking” creatures is always scary, but there’s a sense of comfort knowing that it’s just a movie. We thrive off of being scared and the idea of watching these movies knowing they…

Browning depicts the men in his case study as ordinary middle aged men who choose not to commit murder of Jewish men, women, and children as compared to Ordinary Men or Ideological Soldiers, it is clearly stated that men of Police Battalion 310 not only believed Jews as subhuman enemies but as a threat to Germany. The majority of PB 310 consisted of younger men who were consistently exposed to the political and economic turmoil of Germany. These men likely joined Hitler Youth and were exposed to Nazi propaganda through their school education. As stated on pages 49-50, most of these young soldiers were active party members. It also showed figures for men born between 1905-1912 as more susceptible to Nazi ideology.…

If you ask people what wonder is, you will stump them. They will not know how to explain what exactly they feel when they feel wonder. Wonder is one of those emotions that is hard to explain. You know it when you feel it but you cannot explain it. In the ACP 11O-02 course at Roosevelt University, the students were asked what they believed wonder was. The students looked around, some even looked out the window, hoping that they would not be called on. This question is not one that is asked every day, so people do not normally have an answer ready for it. They probably would have to think about it for a long time until they can sum up at least one sentence for what wonder is. When sitting in the ACP course, the general definition of wonder that came from the discussion, was something that makes you feel amazement.…
