After reading the prologue and first scene in Art Spiegelman’s Maus I, it can be easy for readers to arrive at the conclusion that Vladek Spiegelman is a bit controlling, quirky, and even a bit pessimistic. As seen with his reaction to Mala’s choice to use a wire hanger to hang Artie’s coat, Vladek obviously has a specific idea as to how things should be done. If things aren’t done in the exact manner that Vladek deems fit—as seen with the conversation about using wooden hangers versus wire ones—he takes direct control in order to ensure that things are done properly. Furthermore, as seen with the scene regarding his pill-counting, Vladek is a bit quirky, as seen by his statement, “I’m an expert for this” (Spiegelman 30), implying that counting…

“I throw my weight against their locked doors. The doors hold. I am smart. I am arrogant. I am lucky. I am trying to save our lives.” What does this quote from Sherman Alexie's “Superman and Me” mean? First, the quote should be broken down into fragments. “I throw my weight against their locked doors. The doors hold.” In this part of the quote Alexie is talking about the “...sullen and already defeated Indian kids who sit in the back rows and ignore me with theatrical precision.” He is telling about how he tries over and over to teach them, but they don’t want to learn. They have shut him out and locked their metaphorical doors.…

“Was God hiding from us during the killing? It used to be that God and I shared many drinks together as friends. We don’t talk much anymore, but I would like to think that we can one day reconcile over an urwagwa and he will explain everything to me” (Rusesabagina 184). Throughout the novel, Paul Rusesabagina is faced with a never-ending avalanche of struggles that would smother a weaker man. However, he maintains a façade of resilience despite his tribulations and fears, doing so through his eloquence and mastery of the art of conniving. The aforementioned quote brings home the impact such a horrific experience brought upon him, while highlighting his innate tendency toward open communication. This tendency was his greatest assest throughout the genocide, which he exemplified when he said “Today I…

In the play Joker in the Pack by Charles Cohen, the lead character, Mitch Parker, is alienated by everyone in his life. The play leads us to believe that Mitch’s Father frequently bullies him and puts him down and makes him feel unworthy. Mitch’s friends also alienate him as they constantly tease him and physical abuse him. During school, the educators put Mitch on the spot, center him out front of the entire class and compare him to his “perfect” older brother Clifford. But worst of all, Mitch alienates himself by fooling around and not taking things serious enough. Overall Mitch is an outsider in his own life which doesn't do much to help his cause. Mitch’s father alienates Mitch plenty of ways by verbally and physically abusing him and by making him…

“Fear not your enemies, for they can only kill you...Fear not your friends, for they can only betray you...Fear only the indifferent who permit the killers and betrayers to walk safely on the earth” - Edward Yashinsky. Edward Yashinsky was a Yiddish poet of the early 20th century. While enduring the pains of the Communist concentration he was forced into, he was inspired to write the quote that was previously mentioned. Putting the mask over his face, Erik stared into the mirror. His one-sided conscience told him that destroying the property of families and friends is hilarious. “Let’s go!” Arthur, the sidekick begged to start vandalising. The two high school boys got into the black Jeep. Erik grabbed the brown bat. There were red streaks in the groves of the bat. Smashing the window, Erik began to hit the mailboxes. Arthur’s car engine roared, wanting destruction. The mailboxes cried. Brown, black, pink, orange, red, green, blue mailboxes flew. The innocent neighbors’ mail poured out the mailboxes. The newspaper, The Tangerine Times, had big letters across the top: Lake Windsor’s Quarterback Lives in Tangerine. Only thinking of himself, not allowing the town to see their record gone, Erik continued until there was nothing left. Destruction. Erik looked into the car mirror, unable to look at his own face. Having no heart, sneaking around town, and showing…

In the novel Light in August, many characters struggle with their identity. Specifically, Lena Grove, Joe Christmas, and Gail Hightower (the novel’s three central characters) are all in some way separated from a significant part of the identity. Being a Southern Gothic novel, Light in August often portrays these characters as archetypes in order to relate them to staple character roles in the genre, such as the innocent or the outsider. Because of the archetypal nature of these characters, many of them have a specific and defining trait that is the root of their identity. However, for the three central characters of this novel, Faulkner adds ambiguity and confusion to this defining trait, or…
