Here’s what some municipalities did in the North West of New Brunswick. Four local fire departments joined their efforts to allow greater numbers of firefighters available in case of a major incident. They are all interconnected through the same paging system. If a structure fire occurs during day time where the majority of the firefighters are at work, all pagers from the joined departments are activated at the same time. Whoever is available would immediately respond to the scene. Since it is extremely hard to preserve a group of 25 firefighters, this might be a system that the Aurora Fire Department could look into with neighboring departments. Although, being a composite department of “13 career firefighters and 35 volunteers” might be more difficult to implement. Another sector where it could be beneficial not only for the fire department itself but also to the business community, would be to implement regular building inspections. I know that depending on the type of business, some need to be inspected every year, some every two years and so on. With budget constraint it might not be feasible to reach that objective, perhaps, even a little visit from the firefighters once in a while would serve them well. One particular item that cannot be overlooked is the fire education or seminars in schools and senior homes.
