The signing of this document show Australia's effectiveness in relation to the treatment of refugees. The international document states through article 9 that “No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile and article 13 states that “everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state. Through these human rights you can see how Australia is breaching these rights when it comes to refugees. According to Australia’s human rights commission's webpage, the latest update of refugees residing in detention centers was in 2012 with 46 refugee with adverse security assessments. An Adverse security assessment is when the Australian Security and Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) conduct an assessment on refugees resulting in a predictive judgement as to whether this person or persons might be a potential security risk to Australia. ABC released a news report on the 12th of April in 2013 titled Australia's Guantanamo isn't offshore: it's in Melbourne, written by Jeff Sparrow. This report is about the treatment of asylum seeker and refugees in Guantanamo's detention center and it also touches on adverse security assessment. They also act as an advocate for refugees as the make complaints to the Australian government and courts as well as the united nations when human rights are being breached . They address legislation's and policies that they and refugees find to be unfair by writing submission for law reforms and gaining the attention of the government, other NGOs and the community to take action in relation to the unjust treatment refugees.
